JOHN WICK 5 Director Confirms Current Status of Film

As a lifelong fan of Keanu Reeves and the John Wick franchise, hearing that a potential fifth installment might be in the works is nothing short of exhilarating. It’s been an absolute joy to witness the evolution of this action-packed saga over the years, and it feels like we’ve all grown up together with John Wick.

The fourth installment was supposed to be the end of the John Wick saga, but given the success, there might be another one, John Wick 5, which is surprising because the previous film seemed to conclude the story.

But don’t expect a John Wick 5 movie to hit your screens any time soon. Director Chad Stahelski spoke with Business Insider recently and reiterated that both he and Keanu Reeves were open to return but that story hasn’t materialized yet. “If we felt we weren’t ripping the fans off and had more to give, I’d do it tomorrow,” he said. “I just don’t have that right now. The other stuff I’m working on are great properties, and I’m excited, but nothing is going to beat this.”

It appears that the production of “John Wick 5” might be underway at Lionsgate, as suggested by Joe Drake, Motion Picture Group chairman, during a recent earnings call discussing Q4 of 2023. According to Comicbook.com, not only are video games and TV series spin-offs being developed for the “John Wick” franchise, but Joe Drake also mentioned that the development of “John Wick 5” is happening. This doesn’t come as a shock to us, given the success of the previous films in the series.

We’ve expanded our franchise beyond just the AAA video game realm, with spin-offs and television shows growing the universe. The audience’s interest is being catered to by a consistent flow of content. Officially, “Ballerina” will be the first spinoff released next year, followed by three more in development, including “John Wick 5” and a television series titled “The Continental.” This fifth movie will naturally evolve from the stories we’re already telling, but expect a steady stream of John Wick content.

During a recent earning discussion, as reported by Comicbook.com, Drake mentioned John Wick 5 once more. He casually added that the script for the film is presently in progress.

On the “John Wick” franchise, there have been several spin-offs and now “John Wick: Chapter 5.” We began production on it as soon as the writer’s strike commenced, and resumed as soon as it concluded.

Whether John Wick 5 Happens Is Up to Reeves and Stahelski

Furthermore, Basil Iwanyk, producer of John Wick, revealed to Deadline that the primary consideration for a possible John Wick 5 is if Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski are motivated to create another film.

If Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski manage to come up with something exciting after overcoming their hangovers, provided they find a genuine path back without it feeling contrived, then we can expect the sequel, “John Wick 5”. The production of this film is like waiting for a ship to appear from the fog, but the inspiration for it comes from that initial spark. Making these movies is incredibly challenging for Keanu, Chad, and everyone else involved. By the end of each film, most people are exhausted and say they’ll never do it again, feeling it’s too tough and they’re not getting any younger. But as time passes, the love from fans keeps the project alive, and after working together for 11 years, it has become a kind of family. However, I leave it to Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski to decide if and what that story will be.

He further mentioned during his conversation with IGN, “The success of John Wick 4 among both critics and audiences makes a logical progression to create John Wick 5. While the story for the fifth installment is currently under development, it hasn’t been fully fleshed out yet. Until then, we are still working on determining what this movie will be about or how it will feel.” It’s likely that Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves will contribute to these efforts.

Stahelski Weighs in on Another John Wick Movie

Speaking of Stahelski, he’s shared that at the moment, he doesn’t have a specific idea. However, he could suddenly find an exciting concept tomorrow, which he might share with Keanu or vice versa. If it resonates strongly with both of them like “Oh my God, we need to do this now,” then they would move forward with it immediately.

He also mentioned during an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that if you asked Keanu Reeves about doing “John Wick 5” right now, he’d likely respond with a resounding “Yes!” However, then he might question what exactly it is since they haven’t decided yet. It’s not as if they’re planning everything out today… They have numerous set pieces, ideas, and elements that they haven’t explored before. I’m confident they could create some fantastic scenes. Yet, the challenge lies in determining the main antagonist and the overall message or moral of the story. In essence, he believes there’s no point in bringing back “John Wick” without a solid reason behind it.

Here’s hoping that we’ll get some answers to those questions when the timing is perfect for John Wick 5.

John Wick 5 Not Yet a Sure Thing

It’s important to note that the announcement of early development for a new John Wick movie doesn’t guarantee that it will definitely be made. Keanu Reeves might choose to hang up his shooting boots and retire from action scenes during discussions with Stahelski. It’s also essential to remember that this news doesn’t signal the end of everything. There’s an upcoming secret John Wick project, and the Ballerina film is set for release later this year. Still, we wouldn’t object to more John Wick adventures, as long as John Wick 5 delivers a compelling narrative.
