Back then, you may recall when a Hell demon discovered that overloading Homer Simpson with donuts wasn’t effective? Well, that’s exactly how we feel about the John Wick franchise, and fortunately for us, Lionsgate is planning to keep serving us more movies. Donnie Yen, who starred in Chapter 4, will direct his own Caine spinoff within the series. The studio has also revealed plans for a new anime prequel film that will explain how their deadliest assassin initially escaped from the High Table. Remarkably, neither of these developments outshine the most significant news about the franchise – Keanu Reeves is officially returning for John Wick Chapter 5.
After four films featuring John Wick, one thing that stands clear is Baba Yaga’s invincibility. Although the fourth movie suggested otherwise, its disappointing box office results confirmed our doubts. Now, we are certain following Lionsgate’s announcement at CinemaCon (as reported by Variety initially) – Keanu Reeves will reprise his role in John Wick: Chapter 5, with director Chad Stahelski joining him for the fifth time.
It’s hardly surprising that Reeves reappeared, given the unclear nature of his character’s “demise” in the John Wick series – leaving room for speculation about his survival. Nonetheless, it’s always gratifying to receive official confirmation.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m always eager to learn about upcoming projects in the pipeline, and the rumored spinoff of John Wick certainly piques my interest. Donnie Yen will not only be directing but also starring as Caine, John Wick’s friend-turned-foe-who-remained-an-ally, a blind assassin. Production for this film is set to start in the vibrant city of Hong Kong in 2026. Lionsgate describes it as a tribute to the distinctive action films that Yen has contributed to making popular, while still keeping it under the High Table’s realm. Keanu Reeves (Hell yeah!) mentioned this project as a “modern-day kung-fu classic” that delves deeper into the intriguing world of John Wick.
In addition to the announcement of another series spinoff, there’s also news about a prequel animation targeted at more mature viewers. Shannon Tindle, known for his work on “Ultraman: Rising”, will be directing this project, with Vanessa Taylor penning the script. The animated film will see Reeves lending his voice to John Wick as he recounts an influential event that transpired before the first movie. This event is the “Impossible Task” that allowed Baba Yaga to escape from the High Table’s control originally.
Are we excited about watching those? Absolutely! We’re eagerly looking forward to the Ana de Armas “Ballerina” spinoff, Donnie Yen’s solo film as Caine, and of course, “John Wick: Chapter 5”. Lionsgate could release as many movies as they like, and we’d be like Homer Simpsons, always asking for more.
