John Mayer Reveals He Is Learning to Play Dead Songs with One Less Finger After Injury; See PIC

His career has been marked by numerous challenges, from surgeries on his vocal cords to injuries like the one he’s currently facing with his index finger. Yet, through it all, he continues to push forward, adapting and innovating.

It appears that John Mayer is dealing with some difficulties at the moment. Lately, there has been news about an incident where his index finger came into contact with a truck door, potentially causing temporary immobility. The musician shared a picture of his bandaged finger on Instagram, stating that he will have to manage with just three functional fingers during his forthcoming Dead & Company performances.

In addition, he wrote an extended message expressing that although his index finger requires time to recover, he will need to play the guitar using only the remaining three fingers. Dead & Company are currently in Las Vegas for their Dead Forever residency at the Sphere, with performances ending on August 10th. With just six shows left, John Mayer is adapting to playing with three functional fingers and learning a fresh setlist every night.

“Mayer, a member of the band since 2015, expressed that he’s deeply connected to these shows, viewing each part of him as integral. He feels it’s his duty to perform flawlessly each night, avoiding any mishaps with the equipment. Regrettably, there was an incident here.”

As a seasoned musician myself, I can empathize with John’s current situation. I’ve been there before – injured and unable to play my instrument as I normally would. It’s a frustrating time, but I’ve learned that these moments often serve as opportunities for growth and exploration in our artistry.

The band has only 5 performances remaining before the musician can take a break to let his injured finger heal. John Mayer, who plays with Dead & Company, has exceeded expectations not just as a solo artist, guitarist, and songwriter but also as a notable collaborator, frontman of a fiery blues trio, and more recently, a record producer. In 2001, he released Room for Squares to critical acclaim, followed by Heavier Things in 2003.

Following the conclusion of their residency, there’s no clear timeline for when Dead & Company will take the stage together again. Despite wrapping up their “final tour” in 2023, they returned to Las Vegas, explaining that a residency isn’t considered touring because each show takes place at the same location night after night.

In October 2023, during an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live,” Mayer expressed his conviction that our deep affection for this music compels us to perform shows. We are currently working out the details of what these performances might look like in the future. However, it’s ingrained in all of us to keep sharing our music through live performances.

Similar to how a human might experience recurring physical injuries affecting their daily life, this musician has faced career obstacles before. He openly shared with Rolling Stone that he underwent two operations on his vocal cords (the latest in August 2012), and these procedures have left an enduring alteration in the quality of his voice.

“He stated that he no longer exhibits the same laughter as before, which had a somewhat awkward, high-pitched quality. Nowadays, he laughs differently; he’s discovered fresh methods of expression, both in his speech and his laughter.”
