John Mayer and director McG have bought the famous Los Angeles property that used to house The Jim Henson Company.
Originally constructed in 1917 by Charlie Chaplin, the studio is being renamed Chaplin Studios and is now available for bookings for film, music, television, and digital projects.

Jim Henson Company Lot Returns to Chaplin Studios
The Jim Henson Company was the last to use the property, maintaining its history of imaginative work. Now, Mayer and McG plan to build on that creative spirit while also celebrating the site’s long connection to Hollywood’s early days. Remarkably, much of the original design and buildings created by Charlie Chaplin are still standing.
Over the years, this studio has been the birthplace of many legendary projects, including classic shows like The Adventures of Superman and Soul Train, countless A&M Records albums, and even the historic “We Are the World” recording session in Studio A.

Mayer and McG’s Vision
Mayer described the purchase as a move to preserve and revitalize a historic Hollywood studio. He highlighted the location’s legacy in music, pointing to its past as home to A&M Records and many famous album recordings.
Mayer expressed his excitement about continuing the legacy of this historic Hollywood studio, which has been a vital part of the entertainment industry for decades. He highlighted not only its famous film history but also its rich musical past, including its time as the home of A&M Records and the recording of iconic albums and the charity single ‘We Are the World.’ Known as the Chaplin lot, the studio has produced many timeless works of art, and the team aims to preserve its heritage by keeping it active, open, and available for artists.
McG agreed, pointing out the property’s history in filmmaking and its cultural importance. He said that “you can immediately sense the legacy of Hollywood” when you’re on the lot. The new owners plan to keep it a functioning studio, welcoming artists and outside clients without limitations.
McG described the studio lot as steeped in Hollywood history, mentioning iconic figures like Charlie Chaplin and Superman, and even the show Soul Train having filmed there. He and John are dedicated to preserving this legacy while also making sure the studios continue to be a lively and functional space for artists – a place where filmmakers, musicians, and other creatives can feel inspired the moment they arrive.

Open Now for Bookings
Chaplin Studios is still open and fully operational with the same team. They’re currently taking reservations for a variety of services, including recording, film and TV production, live performances, and private events.
Under the leadership of Mayer and McG, we’re planning improvements to our systems and adding new services in 2026.
