WWE icon John Cena wrestled his last match this past Saturday at a special event in Washington, DC. Over 19,000 fans packed Capital One Arena to witness the finale of Cena’s year-long series of farewell appearances with the company. Highlights from the match were shown on WWE’s live broadcast and in coverage after the event.
John Cena wrestled Gunther in what was his final match. In a surprising turn of events, Cena lost by submission – something he rarely experiences. It was only the fourth time in his entire career that he’d been forced to submit, and the first time in over 20 years.
Throughout the match, Cena attempted a comeback with his signature wrestling moves. He executed several of his famous attacks, but couldn’t manage to keep Gunther from getting back up.
Gunther kept applying sleeper holds, gradually tiring out his opponent. After several attempts to break free, Cena eventually submitted, tapping out while facing the camera. You can find video highlights of the match on YouTube.
The moment marked Cena’s first submission loss since 2004, when he lost to Kurt Angle.
Once the match was over, Gunther exited the ring. Immediately after, a large number of WWE wrestlers came out to pay tribute to Cena. The locker room quickly emptied as wrestlers gathered around the ring to bid him farewell. As a show of respect, both CM Punk and Cody Rhodes presented Cena with their championship belts.
The crowd quickly became upset and loudly booed WWE executive Paul “Triple H” Levesque when he came out. Their frustration with the result was clear, as chants directed at him filled the arena.
Next, a video played celebrating John Cena’s career, featuring memorable moments and appearances by wrestlers from throughout the years. The video also included footage of former WWE leader Vince McMahon.
John Cena took off his shoes and wristbands, leaving them in the ring. He paused to wave to the crowd before walking towards the exit. Before leaving completely, he turned back to speak directly to the camera one last time.
“It’s been a pleasure serving you all these years, thank you,” Cena said.
2025 was a successful year for Gunther, highlighted by a win and, earlier in the year, a victory over Bill Goldberg in Goldberg’s last match. He also captured the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania, though Cody Rhodes later won the title from him at SummerSlam. John Cena secured his final championship win earlier in the year, defeating Dominik Mysterio in Boston.
