John Carpenter Teases Potential Sequel to ‘The Thing’

John Carpenter has suggested that a follow-up to his iconic 1982 film, The Thing, could be happening.

The director recently told fans at Fan Expo Philadelphia that they are currently developing the project, but cautioned that its future isn’t guaranteed, saying, “We’ll see.”

Blumhouse was already developing a new ‘The Thing’ movie, but John Carpenter hasn’t said whether it would be a continuation of the story, a fresh start, or a story set in the past.

As a huge film fan, I’ve always been fascinated by The Thing. It’s based on a classic sci-fi novella called Who Goes There? and the story really gets under your skin. It centers around a team of American researchers stationed in Antarctica who stumble upon something truly terrifying – an alien that can perfectly copy any living creature it comes into contact with. It’s a brilliantly unsettling premise!

As the team struggles with growing fear and suspicion, they begin to suspect each other of being the creature. The film stars Kurt Russell as helicopter pilot R.J. MacReady, alongside Wilford Brimley, Keith David, and Donald Moffat.

When The Thing came out in 1982, opinions were divided. While reviewers were impressed by the incredibly realistic special effects, many found the movie’s imagery unsettling and its characters not fully fleshed out. The film earned $19.6 million at the box office, but it had a tough time competing with popular sci-fi films like E.T. and a busy summer movie season.

Despite a slow start, The Thing gradually gained a dedicated fanbase through VHS tapes and TV broadcasts. Today, it’s considered a classic of both science fiction and horror, inspiring countless movies and appearing in various forms of media like video games, comics, and theme park rides. In 2011, a prequel film was released, giving fans even more of the story they loved.
