Jodie Foster recently suggested that Martin Scorsese’s 2023 film, Killers of the Flower Moon, could have been more effective as an extended series on a streaming platform rather than a three-and-a-half-hour movie.
Jodie Foster made these statements while accepting an award at the Marrakech Film Festival. Everything reported is based on her remarks during the event.
Foster discussed the future of storytelling, noting that streaming services are now ideal for developing in-depth and intricate stories. She pointed out that while theaters are largely filled with big-budget superhero films, longer, more complex narratives are thriving on streaming platforms where they have the time and room to unfold.
She believes streaming services are now capable of telling stories in ways that traditional movies can’t, and that the most important and innovative storytelling is happening on those platforms.
Jodie Foster used Killers of the Flower Moon as an example of a film that felt rushed. While Martin Scorsese intended to portray the lives of Native Americans in the 1920s, Foster felt the movie ultimately centered on the interactions between the two main characters, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. She described the film as “a very interesting movie about two guys who go back and forth and talk to each other,” suggesting it didn’t fully explore the broader story it initially promised.
Foster explained that while many were pleased to see the Osage Nation’s story depicted in the film, they were disappointed that it focused more on their deaths than on their lives and experiences. She noted the common reaction was essentially, ‘It’s great the story is being told, but it seems to focus only on the fact that all the Native women are victims.’
She explained that the filmmakers felt constrained by time, but she believed they could have expanded the story. She suggested an eight-episode limited series would have allowed for a more comprehensive look at different perspectives. She specifically felt they could have delved deeper into the themes of harmful masculinity and dedicated an entire episode to the Native American narrative.
Jodie Foster believes Martin Scorsese’s film ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ would have worked better as an eight-hour series designed for streaming. She shared this opinion while discussing the future of filmmaking at the Marrakech Film Festival.

Look, I have to say, some of the reaction to Jodie Foster’s recent comments felt a little blown out of proportion. Anyone who knows their film history understands the incredibly close relationship she and Martin Scorsese share. I mean, she was a teenager when she starred in Taxi Driver, and it clearly made a lasting impression on both of them. In fact, he sent her a beautiful video message just the day before, during her tribute! It’s a bond built on decades of collaboration and mutual respect, and I think people forget that sometimes.
Foster also complimented Scorsese’s previous television work, specifically his 2016 series Vinyl. She expressed her hope that he’ll create more long-form stories in the future, believing he has a great deal to offer in that format. She said she’s excited to see him explore that possibility further.
She also discussed the continued preference among many filmmakers for creating traditional, lengthy movies rather than utilizing streaming platforms for expansive narratives. She questioned why so many directors feel compelled to make extremely long films – what she referred to as five-hour features – and then anticipate those films being shown in theaters.
