Joby Aviation: A Most Interesting Speculation

Joby Aviation (JOBY 4.26%), a purveyor of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has, thus far, failed to ignite the market’s imagination with any particular brilliance. One might almost say its performance has been… predictably pedestrian. Yet, I venture to suggest – with a confidence born not of optimism, but of a certain detached amusement – that this year may prove different. There are, as always, reasons, though whether they are sufficient to defy the inherent vulgarity of speculation remains to be seen.

Why Might Joby Ascend?

Firstly, Joby’s S4 eVTOLs possess a certain… elegance. They are, quite simply, faster and more efficient than their competitors. This is achieved through the clever employment of tilt-rotor propellers – a mechanism that allows for a seamless transition between ascent and cruising. It’s a question of refinement, you see. Other ventures – Archer Aviation‘s (ACHR 4.30%) Midnight, for instance – rely on separate propellers, a rather clumsy arrangement that adds weight and, dare I say, detracts from the aesthetic. It’s a distinction that could well position Joby to eclipse its rivals and render the traditional helicopter… quaint.

Secondly, Joby has attracted the patronage of those with both means and, occasionally, discernment. Toyota (TM 0.70%), Delta Air Lines (DAL 2.53%), and even the U.S. Air Force have deigned to offer their support. One observes that good taste is not always a prerequisite for investment, but its presence is invariably… encouraging. And let us not forget the acquisition of Uber

It is true that Joby currently generates revenue at a rate that might be described as… modest. But this year, it anticipates FAA approval for commercial flights in the United States, and a launch in Dubai. These developments could, of course, propel the stock higher, even if, at 47 times projected 2027 sales, it remains… optimistically priced. One is reminded of a certain maxim: to speculate is human; to profit consistently, divine. Whether Joby will achieve the latter remains, naturally, to be seen. But a little extravagance, a touch of daring… these are qualities one always appreciates, even in the rather prosaic world of finance.
