Joby Aviation. The name tasted like ozone and ambition. They’re building flying taxis, or eVTOLs as the engineers like to call them. Electric vertical takeoff and landing. Sounds good on paper, doesn’t it? The promise of skipping the gridlock, soaring above the mess. The reality, as always, was a little more…complicated.
They’ve got plans. Big plans. But plans are cheap. Execution is what separates the winners from the wreckage. I’d been looking at this company for a while, trying to find the angle. The thing that would make it more than just another high-flying dream.
Dubai and the American Dream
Dubai. They’re making a push there. A six-year exclusive deal with the Road and Transport Authority. A vertiport at the airport, about 60% done as of November. They expect to finish it this quarter. Three more landing pads planned—the Dubai Mall, Atlantis the Royal, and some university. It sounded like a showroom, not a transportation system. Still, it’s a start. They’ve got permission to fly, done some demos at the Airshow. First passenger flights this year, they say. I’d want to see some real numbers before I bought the champagne.
Back in the States, they’re in the final stretch of certification—Type Inspection Authorization. Part of the White House’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. Testing in select markets. Sounds promising, but “promising” doesn’t pay the bills. They’re hoping for operations under the program by mid-2026. A lot can go wrong between now and then.
A High-Risk Proposition
First flights would be a milestone, no doubt. But milestones are expensive. This isn’t a business built on pocket change. They needed funding. So, they announced a share offering—52 million shares at $11.35. Dilutive for existing shareholders? You could say that. It’s the cost of doing business when you’re burning cash faster than you can raise it. Like patching a leaky boat with dollar bills.
This is a pre-revenue, pre-operational startup. That means time is the enemy. Delays in certification, production hiccups—any of it could send the stock tumbling. The market doesn’t like uncertainty, and this company is swimming in it. If you believe in the future of eVTOLs, Joby is a contender. But understand this: it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Don’t risk what you can’t afford to lose. This isn’t a place for widows and orphans. It’s a calculated gamble, and the house always has an edge.
