On the set of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Joaquin Phoenix, known for his method acting, immersed himself in character once more, and some of his character’s behaviors seeped into real-life situations. In a conversation with Variety, Harry Lawtey shared an anecdote about an on-set prank by Phoenix, aged 49, who was still in Joker costume during a late-night FaceTime call with Lawtey’s mother.
Lawtey, who plays Harvey Dent opposite Phoenix’s Joker, mentioned that Phoenix jokingly suggested the prank call. He explained further, “My mother was in England at the time, so it was quite late there, and she was preparing for bed. I said ‘Hello,’ then put the phone to my face, and Joaquin placed his head on my shoulder.
I’m delighted to share that the trick I pulled off turned out splendidly. It led to a rather unexpected response – my mother let out a scream, bolted away, and even managed to rouse my father from his slumber.
30-year-old Lawtey expressed admiration for Phoenix and his dedication to the role. He was awestruck by how Phoenix perfectly portrayed the iconic and unsettling Joker’s laugh, followed by a cough after each take. Lawtey highly respected the actor’s perseverance and talent, describing it as an enlightening lesson in acting. Phoenix left a deep impression on the young British actor.
Title “Folie à Deux” delves into Joker’s time within Arkham Asylum, showcasing Arthur Fleck’s journey to self-discovery, his romantic encounters, and his newfound passion for music. In this narrative, Lawtey plays the role of Harvey Dent, creating a direct conflict with Phoenix’s character, Arthur Fleck. The film features stars such as Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, and Catherine Keener, working alongside Phoenix and Lawtey.
Although fans anticipate plenty of music and singing in the upcoming quasi-musical sequel, Lawety clarified to the media outlet that he doesn’t have to sing. He explained that not having him sing was perfectly fine, especially since Lady Gaga was there. In his words, “If anyone in that room should be singing, it’s her. And watching that performance up close, it was an unforgettable moment.
The sequel to “Joker: Folie à Deux,” directed by Todd Phillips, is set to hit theaters on October 4, marking five years since the premiere of the first film that bagged a grand total of 11 Oscars. Notably, it was Joaquin Phoenix who took home one of those awards for his exceptional performance as Best Actor.
