As a lifelong fan of DC comics, I can confidently say that the Joker is one of the most captivating and intriguing characters to ever grace the pages of a comic book. The sheer madness and unpredictability he embodies have made him an icon in popular culture.
A legendary figure, the Joker, is considered one of DC Comics’ most remarkable creations ever. In a recent article, it was disclosed that he was almost written out in his initial appearance, a move that would have been regrettable and perhaps among the poorest decisions in comic book history. Fortunately, thanks to an insightful editor, we can now savor the full spectrum of the Joker’s insanity.
The character known as the Joker has been brought to life on screen by various actors in live-action, with Joaquin Phoenix being the latest to portray him. In the movie “Joker” and its follow-up, he played a different take on the character named Arthur Fleck.
Although his first performance received praise, the second film was a disappointing flop that people would rather forget quickly. Interestingly, you might not know that Phoenix came close to portraying Arthur Fleck instead; the actor himself admitted and confirmed that he was given the role of the Joker years prior to Phillips’ movie.
And while Phoenix won the Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker, he is actually not the first actor to win the award for portraying that same character. Before him, the award was posthumously given to Heath Ledger for his portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. This performance is absolutely amazing, and, as you might assume, it has gone down in history as one of the best on-screen performances of all time.
Heath Ledger’s commitment to his iconic character unfortunately led to his tragic demise. There were concerns about how Christian Bale (Phoenix) might be affected as well, but luckily, he persevered through the intense role and delivered an acclaimed performance that stands alongside Ledger’s in the first movie. Interestingly, you may not know that Christian Phoenix was initially considered for the part that eventually went to Heath Ledger. In fact, the actor has recently disclosed that Christopher Nolan offered him the role, but he admitted he wasn’t prepared to take on such a significant character at that time.
I had a conversation with Christopher Nolan about “The Dark Knight”, but for some reason, the discussion didn’t lead to anything at the time…I can hardly picture how amazing that movie would have been without Heath Ledger’s performance, can we agree on that?

Imagine if Phoenix played the Joker in The Dark Knight instead of Heath Ledger. If you put aside everything you already know about the character, it’s not hard to picture Phoenix delivering a compelling performance. In fact, some believe he would have done exceptionally well if cast by Nolan at that time. However, we must acknowledge that Ledger has left an indelible mark on the role, making him impossible to replace. So while we can appreciate the thought experiment, we have to agree with Phoenix when he says that no one could ever truly fill Ledger’s shoes in that iconic role.
