After Jimmy Kimmel was briefly taken off the air on ABC, both Disney+ and Hulu experienced a significant increase in subscription cancellations, as reported by the data tracking company Antenna.
As a movie critic who keeps a close eye on streaming numbers, I’m seeing some concerning trends with Disney+. Their monthly subscriber loss rate, or ‘churn,’ jumped significantly – from 4% in August to 8% in September. And it wasn’t just Disney+; Hulu experienced a similar doubling of churn, going from 5% to 10% in that same period. These numbers suggest viewers are starting to cancel their subscriptions at a faster rate, and that’s something Disney needs to address.
Prior to September, Disney+ typically saw about 3 to 4% of its subscribers cancel each month. Hulu’s cancellation rate was similar, averaging around 4 to 5%.
Peacock, Paramount+, and HBO Max continued with their standard subscription prices, and Netflix still saw very few customers canceling their subscriptions – only about 2 percent.
Although there was a brief increase in cancellations, it didn’t last long. According to one source, people often make a fuss when they cancel a service, but frequently resubscribe without saying much. Since Kimmel returned to his show, ratings have actually gone up.
Okay, so I’ve been digging into the Antenna data, and there are a few things to keep in mind. Apparently, Disney themselves aren’t totally sure how Antenna calculates changes in subscriptions – whether someone upgrading or downgrading counts as a full change, for example. That means the numbers we’re seeing might actually be *higher* than what Disney tracks internally. Plus, it’s hard to say exactly how much Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension impacted cancellations versus the normal cancellations people make when prices go up. It’s just not a perfect picture.
Jimmy Kimmel faced a brief suspension after making a controversial comment on his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, on September 15th. The comment, which involved Charlie Kirk’s alleged attacker, quickly spread online and drew significant criticism, causing public outrage. However, ABC reinstated Kimmel to the show within a week.
A lot of people on social media urged others to cancel their Disney+ subscriptions to show their disapproval. Radio personality Howard Stern was one of them, saying he canceled his own subscription because of Disney’s decision. “I canceled Disney+ to protest what Disney did,” Stern explained.
It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact financial consequences, but data from Antenna indicates Disney could lose approximately three million subscribers. Because of how billing works, these cancellations might not be reflected in Disney’s next financial report. Furthermore, Disney has decided to stop sharing subscriber numbers in future reports.
