Sony Pictures and Mandalay Pictures are joining forces to create a new action film titled *Archangel*, starring Jim Caviezel.
The movie will be released in theaters on November 6, 2026, the studio announced on Monday.
Jim Caviezel, known for his role as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s film *The Passion of the Christ*, will appear with Olivia Thirlby, Garret Dillahunt, and Shea Whigham.
I’m really excited about this new movie! The story was crafted by Chris Papasadero and Randall Wallace, and it ended up at Sony thanks to Mandalay Pictures. David Zelon and Peter Guber are producing, which is awesome, and Will Eubank – who I really liked his work on *Underwater* and *The Signal* – is directing. It sounds like it’s in good hands!
This role is a significant step for Jim Caviezel, following his recent success in the hit film *Sound of Freedom*. He’s also well known for his lead role in the popular CBS series *Person of Interest*.
Jim Caviezel recently mentioned on the *Arroyo Grande* podcast that he’d be willing to reprise his role as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s new film, *The Resurrection of the Christ*. He stated, “I’m ready to return to the story that changed my life.”
It looks like there’s been a change of plans: Finnish actor Ohtonen, age 36, will now be playing the part. He’s widely recognized for his role as the warrior Wolland in the Netflix series *The Last Kingdom*.
In *Archangel*, Jim Caviezel is moving from playing holy characters to a more action-packed, risky role, and Sony Pictures believes he’ll be successful.
