Jim Carrey surprised people with his appearance during a recent public event in France, leading to a lot of discussion online. At the César Film Awards in Paris on February 26th, the 64-year-old actor’s changed look led some fans to say they didn’t recognize him.
Recent online speculation about Jim Carrey undergoing cosmetic surgery appears to be unfounded. According to Dr. Raffi Hovsepian, a prominent plastic surgeon, changes in the actor’s appearance are likely due to natural aging, specifically around his forehead and brow. After reviewing recent photos, Dr. Hovsepian found no evidence of surgical procedures.
The doctor noticed a change in Jim Carrey’s midface and cheeks, specifically a noticeable fullness. Dr. Hovsepian believes this could be due to either a small amount of hyaluronic acid fillers, or temporary swelling from treatments designed to add volume.
The surgeon explained that some softening around the jaw and slight hollowing under the eyes are common signs of getting older. He also noted that if the celebrity has had any cosmetic work done, it’s been subtle – his face still looks natural and recognizable.
The plastic surgeon found no evidence of botched surgeries. He explained that the man, who is in his 60s, was simply experiencing normal age-related changes in his facial structure, which might be more noticeable due to the lighting at the event.
Jim Carrey’s visit to Paris was notable because he had mostly retired from acting after a long and incredibly successful career in Hollywood. He took a four-year break before returning to film with the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, where he plays the quirky Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik.
In a December 2024 interview, the actor playfully discussed his decision to reprise the role in the third movie. He quipped that portraying a genius wasn’t exactly natural for him, then jokingly admitted he needed the paycheck, saying, “I bought a lot of stuff, and frankly, I need the money.”
The César Awards felt less like a showcase for new films and more like a tribute to a successful career. Jim Carrey received an honorary César Award – France’s version of an Oscar – recognizing his significant impact on cinema.
Showing his gratitude to the host country, Jim Carrey gave his entire acceptance speech in French. He explained that, as an actor, each role is like a piece of clay – you get to mold it and shape it however you want.
He became visibly moved as he thanked his family, especially his daughter Jane and grandson Jackson, who were there. He also fondly remembered his late father, Percy Joseph Carrey, calling him the funniest person he’d ever met.
I’ve been following Jim Carrey for a long time, and it’s fascinating to see where he is now. Beyond the recent accolades, he’s really leaning into his art – painting and political cartoons, specifically. He’s definitely suggested he’s done with acting for good, but he’s also playfully said he’d be tempted back only by a script that really grabs him – and he means a script so special it would practically be written in gold ink!
Jim Carrey is currently starring as the villain in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which came out in theaters in late 2024. In the film, he plays two roles – the current Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik – proving he’s still great at physical comedy.
The actor doesn’t have any major movies planned for this year, as he’s enjoying a more private life outside of the busy film industry. His recent appearance in Paris highlighted how much his work continues to be appreciated around the world.
