Jessica Rabbit Could Be Hitting the Big Screen Soon According to Most Recent Reports

Gary K. Wolf, the creator of Roger Rabbit, now officially owns the rights to his characters again.

ImNotBad.com and Jessica Rabbit World were the first to report that the rights to Roger Rabbit and other characters are now back with Wolf. This happened because of a law that lets creators get the rights to their work back after 35 years.

Wolf believes regaining the rights to his characters and books will allow him to create new projects similar to ‘Roger Rabbit’. He explained, “I can now essentially develop my own versions of ‘Roger Rabbit.’”

A live-action movie based on Jessica Rabbit is in development. It won’t be a remake of the classic 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but will instead be based on the 2022 novel Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business by Wolf.

According to Wolf, the most advanced project currently in development is a live-action film based on the book Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business. It was the first project they considered and began working on.

Wolf stressed that any future films need to be as good as, or better than, the first one. He explained that this applies to all aspects of production – the visual effects, the overall feel, the story, the emotional connection, and how the characters grow. He’s committed to delivering that level of quality to satisfy fans, as he’s promised them he would.

He added that Disney could still be part of the project if he decides to include them. He expressed a strong desire to collaborate with Disney again and hopes they’ll join as partners. He’s particularly keen to reunite with the original team, including Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy, and to have Charles Fleischer reprise his role as the voice of the rabbit.

Wolf was surprised to learn it was even possible to regain the rights to his work. He explained that after 35 years, you can actually petition the Library of Congress to get those rights back. An attorney told him, ‘You could potentially get your rights back from Disney,’ which Wolf initially dismissed as impossible.

Wolf also commended Disney for their handling of the initial film and the associated rights. He explained, “Disney was fantastic to work with – they were always accommodating and treated me very well.” The rights to the movie recently returned to him after about a year, allowing him time to thoughtfully develop future projects.

Gary Wolf and his team are developing projects based on his books, but a live-action Jessica Rabbit movie is the furthest along. Wolf aims to build out the world of Who Framed Roger Rabbit while maintaining the familiar tone and style that fans enjoy. He says he wants to deliver something fun that fans have been hoping for for the past 35 years.

Fans might soon get to see a new story featuring Jessica Rabbit, which would be a significant development for the world of Roger Rabbit.
