Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story quickly became a popular show on FX in 2011, known for its dramatic plots, over-the-top style, and instantly shareable moments. However, after Jessica Lange, an Academy Award-winning actress, left after the fourth season (Freak Show) in 2014, the show began to lose its momentum and impact on pop culture. Now, according to Deadline, Murphy is aiming to revitalize the series with its 13th season. He’s bringing back Jessica Lange, along with other familiar faces from previous seasons, and adding singer and Wicked star Ariana Grande to the cast.
Ryan Murphy announced the new season’s cast on Instagram for Halloween. The video featured familiar faces from American Horror Story, saving Jessica Lange for last. This was a shock, considering she previously said she wouldn’t return after a 10-12 year break, stating, “Christ, no.” It’s a complete reversal, similar to how Andrew Garfield initially denied being in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following the reveal of her name, a quote from AHS: Coven appeared: “Surprise, bitch. I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.” The cast also includes Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, and Leslie Grossman.
Fans are wondering if the upcoming season of American Horror Story will continue the storyline from Coven, a popular season centered around a group of witches in New Orleans. While the show usually tells self-contained stories, the 2018 season, Apocalypse, brought back characters from Coven. With many of the original Coven cast members already confirmed for season 13, some speculate this could be a continuation – essentially Coven: Part 3. If Lily Rabe, Taissa Farmiga, and Francis Conroy return, it would complete the core cast. We’ll soon find out the official premise and title of the season. If this is the show’s final season, hopefully it will be a memorable one – a fitting finale with a nod to Jessica Lange.
