Jesse Tyler Ferguson Reflects on How Playing a Gay Character in Modern Family Became His Real-Life Armor; Calls It ‘Superpower’

As a follower who deeply appreciates the power of representation in media, I am profoundly moved by Jesse Tyler Ferguson‘s journey. His portrayal of Mitchell Pritchett in Modern Family not only brought joy to millions but also provided him with a unique form of protection and acceptance in real life.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson shared on his podcast Dinner’s on Me that portraying a gay character on Modern Family made him feel more accepted and secure in everyday life. In essence, he explained how embodying this cherished role in a widely watched show gave him an unusual sense of safety off-screen.

Jesse, known for playing Mitchell Pritchett in the popular TV show Modern Family, pondered over the influential impact his character had on shaping people’s perceptions towards him personally and regarding his sexual orientation.

As a devotee recounting my personal story, I’d like to share an incident before joining the Modern Family cast in 2009. During a trip to Las Vegas, I experienced a lack of support from some individuals due to my sexual orientation. Fortunately, there was no physical hostility, but I distinctly felt a wave of discomfort from people who seemed uneasy around me and my partner at the time.

Upon my return to Las Vegas following the worldwide acclaim of the show, it felt as though the city had undergone a significant transformation.

Initially, everything seemed grim once more, but then I discovered it was merely an actor embodying Mitchell. As the realization sank in, my perception of him changed dramatically. It’s almost like he possesses a peculiar gift, a sort of shield that springs up when he performs as Mitchell. This protection, I believe, stems from his genuine fondness for the character.

I found myself enveloped in an unusual sense of protection, as if a role I played was simultaneously shielding me. This role seemed to bestow upon me a sort of armor, making me feel secure and cherished by the audience. Frankly, it all felt quite peculiar.

When Modern Family debuted, I found myself walking down the aisle with producer Justin Mikita, whom I first encountered at our local gym. Our chance encounter sparked a romance that eventually led us to tie the knot in July 2013.

He told Variety, “Justin and I simultaneously walked towards our respective aisles, guided by our parents. Afterwards, we both converged at the altar, with Tony Kushner waiting there to perform the ceremony. This was utterly surreal for me as he’s been an inspiration of mine.”

Currently, Justin Mikita and Jesse Tyler Ferguson are parents to two lovely kids: Beckett Mercer and Sullivan Louis.
