Jesse Tyler Ferguson Claims He Was ‘So Mad’ Post-Diagnosis With Vocal Cord Hemorrhage; Here’s How It Affected His Part In Modern Family

As a lifestyle expert reflecting on this insightful story about Jesse Tyler Ferguson‘s vocal cord hemorrhage while shooting for Modern Family, I find it both heartwarming and awe-inspiring to see how professionals navigate through unforeseen challenges that may threaten their careers.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson shared details about receiving a vocal cord hemorrhage during filming for a crucial Modern Family episode. In a conversation on the Dinner’s On Me podcast, he reminisced about having to re-record all his lines from a season 5 episode due to a rough voice tone.

In a recent disclosure, Ferguson, known for his role as Mitchell Pritchett, shared that during a visit to an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist, he was advised to take a break from using his vocal cords due to the harm they had sustained. The actor explained, “When I went to the ENT, they said, ‘Oh, you need to take 10 days off from speaking.’ This was right in the midst of filming an episode.”

He further stated, “We had flown in guest stars for it. And vocal rest is a very serious thing: when you’re told to go on vocal rest, you got to do it.”

Following the doctor’s confirmation of his health issue, Ferguson informed the producers that he wouldn’t be able to record dialogues for the forthcoming episodes because of his current state.

The Ice Age star stated, “I was like, ‘You don’t understand, if I do this, it is costing me my career.'” He continued to say, “I was so mad. Like, I had tears welling up my eyes.”

In an unusual arrangement, Ferguson shared that the show’s producers accommodated his health condition by filming some episodes without him providing voice-overs for his lines. Later on, he had to mouth his dialogue into a microphone. He admitted, “It was awful.” He further explained, “From time to time, I come across that episode, and it’s as if a ventriloquist is controlling my voice. It doesn’t appear as though I’m talking at all.”

If you’re a fan of the actor looking for the episodes where Ferguson revealed details, Jesse mentioned that the one featuring his character visiting Cameron’s family at the farm is called “Closet Con’13”. In this episode, Mitchell and Cam take Lily to meet her grandmother.

Oh my gosh, I’ve been absolutely hooked on “Modern Family”! This brilliant sitcom spanned an incredible 11 seasons, making it a television staple for years. It was such a delight to see the talented Jesse Tyler Ferguson team up with Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, and Julie Bowen – just to name a few of the fantastic cast members!

The episodes of Modern Family are available to stream on Disney+.
