Jesse Eisenberg Believes the Negative Reaction to His Lex Luthor Role in ‘Batman v Superman’ Hurt His Career

As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for cinematic adaptations of my beloved video games, I can empathize with Jesse Eisenberg‘s professional journey following his portrayal of Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The harsh criticism he faced after the film’s poor reception must have felt like a level boss I couldn’t beat on my first try.

Jesse Eisenberg recently discussed the challenging times he experienced following his portrayal of Lex Luthor in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”. He disclosed that the film’s negative response had a significant impact on his career, labeling it as one of the most difficult phases of his acting career.

Eisenberg openly acknowledged that the film and his portrayal of Lex Luthor were met with considerable criticism, a fact that he found difficult to deal with. Putting it simply, he confessed, “I was part of a Batman movie, but it didn’t go down well, and neither did I. It’s a bit awkward to say, but I think the negative reception may have had an impact on my career since it was in such a public platform.

For the very first time, Eisenberg encountered this broad wave of criticism. Although he’d been involved in other critically panned productions, they didn’t generate significant buzz. However, due to the high-profile nature of Batman v Superman, the negative reviews were hard to ignore.

The Zack Snyder-led movie faced negative reviews from critics, garnering only a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the extended version, titled “Ultimate Edition,” gained more favor among fans. Despite shattering box office records during its debut weekend, it experienced a significant decline in its second week and failed to regain momentum. The film ultimately earned $873.6 million globally, ranking it as the seventh-highest-grossing movie of 2016. However, it underperformed compared to expectations and received a mixed response from viewers.

In simpler terms, Eisenberg’s interpretation of Lex Luthor, which some people compared to his quirky portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in “The Social Network,” split opinions among fans. Critics argued that his performance deviated too much from the typical intimidating character traits of Lex Luthor.

Despite the criticism, Eisenberg acknowledged his role in the situation, stating, “I enjoyed my part and the film, every aspect of it, so I feel it’s only fair to accept blame for myself.” He characterized the subsequent period as disheartening, but also noted that he tends to view situations through a somewhat pessimistic lens.

After the release of “Batman v Superman”, Eisenberg has been dedicating more time to writing and directing. He made his directorial debut in 2022 with “When You Finish Saving the World” and is now garnering attention for his second project, “A Real Pain”, which has already generated awards speculation.

With Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor for James Gunn’s forthcoming Superman film, it appears that Jesse Eisenberg has discovered a fresh avenue for his career within the cinematic world.
