Jeremy Renner has refuted accusations from filmmaker Yi Zhou, who claims he sent her inappropriate photos and acted aggressively during a private encounter.
A spokesperson for Renner stated that the claims being made are false and inaccurate, according to Variety.
Thirty-seven-year-old Zhou shared accusations on Instagram this week, using hashtags like #Cancel and #CancelJeremyRenner.
She stated that Renner began contacting her in June, sending her unwanted explicit images of himself through direct messages and WhatsApp. She also claimed he then pursued a romantic relationship with her, expressing feelings that led her to believe him. Additionally, Zhou reported being subjected to online harassment and smear campaigns. In a social media post, she suggested this experience highlighted a problematic side of Hollywood, particularly a tendency to discredit women and Asian female filmmakers.
I was really shocked to hear what Zhou shared with the Daily Mail. Apparently, on August 20th, she met with Renner to talk about a potential documentary. She claims he drank a whole bottle of wine and became aggressive, and she actually had to lock herself in a room because she was so scared. It’s just a really upsetting story.
Prior to the accusations, Renner and Zhou were working together on various projects. Zhou is currently directing a documentary called Chronicles of Disney, which details the history of the studio and includes interviews with Renner.
The film’s creative team includes costume designer Mark Bridges and makeup artist Bill Corso. Jeremy Renner is also collaborating with Zhou on the animated film Stardust Future: Stars and Scars, which is noteworthy as the first animated movie made entirely with artificial intelligence. Variety reports the film was planned for a November release to qualify for awards consideration, and a portion of the profits will benefit Renner’s Rennervation Foundation.
