Jeremy Renner is disclosing intimate and extraordinary experiences from his recovery process after the near-fatal snowplow accident, as detailed in his recently published memoir “My Next Breath” (released on April 29). In this book, the actor divulges that while being heavily medicated, he had vivid hallucinations where he believed he was engaging in conversations with fellow actor Jamie Foxx, and even imagined they went snowmobiling together.
Looking back candidly in my memoir, I, at the age of 54, ponder over the profound impact of my post-accident painkillers. These concoctions of opioids and benzodiazepines transformed my reality into a surreal landscape where I conversed not only with drapes but also had lengthy chats with an apparition that resembled Jamie Foxx, albeit he was never physically present in my room during those times. In this altered state, we discussed various topics as if we were old friends, and even embarked on snowmobile adventures together – a rather peculiar activity considering the lack of snow in Southern California.
In a jovial manner, Renner acknowledged the absurdity of the visions while acknowledging their powerful emotional resonance, particularly given Foxx’s own health scare – a brain hemorrhage leading to a stroke – which occurred later that very year. At one moment, Renner even harbored the thought that he might have offered some kind of support in a supernatural sense for Foxx.
His hallucinations started while he was recuperating at home following a snowplow accident on New Year’s Day 2023 that weighed around 14,000 pounds, which had hospitalized him. Once he switched from intravenous drugs to pills, his intense visual experiences began, with his family observing, a mix of worry and familiarity. “My mom or Kym would think I was under the influence when they heard me talking non-stop and say, ‘Jeremy’s just having a trip right now,'” he reminisced.
In the end, the actor chose to stop taking his pain medication abruptly – against doctor’s recommendations – in a bid to regain normal life. He describes the process as grueling, admitting to uncontrollable crying and shivering for about 36 hours. “Everything I tried to do just made me more agitated,” he wrote. “Occasionally, I took a small amount to help with the transition, but things got better once I passed the withdrawal stage.
Renner’s candid and frequently amusing narrative of his recovery journey is equally inspiring as it is enlightening. He visualizes Foxx during difficult times and triumphs over both physical and emotional hardships without relying on medication, demonstrating a tenacious will to heal – not just physically, but emotionally as well. “My Next Breath” doesn’t merely document survival; instead, it honors resilience, absurdity, and the peculiar, occasionally soothing illusions that guide us through our darkest hours.
