Jennifer Marshall recently explained why she wasn’t in the last season of Stranger Things. The actress, who played Max Mayfield’s mother, Susan Hargrove, addressed fans’ questions about her missing character after they noticed she didn’t appear in the final episodes. Her reason for not being involved is very personal.
Marshall played Max’s mother in seasons two and four of the Netflix show. In the final season, Sadie Sink’s character, Max, is mostly in the hospital, and although her brother Lucas is frequently there with her, her mother is never seen. This absence led viewers to wonder why Max’s mother, Susan, wasn’t included in the story.
Marshall shared the news of her cancer diagnosis on social media. She also expressed her disappointment about not being invited back to the show, explaining that continuing to work on it would have provided her with valuable health insurance through her actors’ union.
Marshall explained that while he was in remission from cancer during the filming of Season 5, continuing to work would have allowed him to keep his health insurance through the union. He also jokingly suggested the show might have had too many characters and bluntly called Susan Hargrove ‘the worst mother ever.’
She explained her earlier comments to Variety, saying the post was intended as a joke and wasn’t meant to criticize the show or the people who made it.
She explained that the video was originally just meant to be a joke, and she was surprised by how popular it became. She doesn’t hold any grudges and wishes the situation had turned out differently. While she was disappointed not to be asked back, she doesn’t know the reason why, and she’s thankful for having been a part of the show in the past.
After the latest season of Stranger Things dropped on New Year’s Eve, Marshall posted a funny message on Instagram about her character not being in the new episodes.
Wow, it’s finally over… but I’m really wondering where the mother is. How could a mom not be with her child in the hospital? I’d love to hear what everyone thinks happened to her.
In 2022, Sadie Sink first shared her cancer diagnosis on Facebook. She explained that she was receiving treatment while filming the fourth season of Stranger Things, and by the fourth episode, she had begun wearing a wig because of hair loss.
She also shared how supportive the cast and crew were during that time, especially Sadie Sink.
Marshall shared that he opened up to people on set, including Sadie Sink, who plays his daughter Max. He was deeply touched by her kindness and compassion, describing her not only as a talented actress but, even more importantly, as a genuinely caring person.
Marshall shared that she later had a private conversation with the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, about her health diagnosis. She requested they not write her character off the show, as she wanted to continue working despite her condition.
She described the time on set as a welcome relief during a difficult period, praising the Duffer brothers for being kind, caring, and supportive.
