I’m so excited! It’s official – Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are coming back as Katniss and Peeta for a new Hunger Games movie, called Sunrise on the Reaping. I can’t wait to see them back in those roles!
The new prequel movie will feature the original actors, reportedly in a brief scene set in the future, but details about how they’ll appear are still a secret.
This marks the first time the duo has appeared in the franchise since 2015’s Mockingjay – Part 2.
It’s not unexpected that they’re revisiting the series, since the 2023 film, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, starring Rachel Zegler, didn’t revive the franchise’s popularity like the earlier movies with Jennifer Lawrence did.

About the Film
Sunrise on the Reaping tells the story of a young Haymitch Abernathy and the particularly harsh 50th Hunger Games, also called the Second Quarter Quell. Set 24 years before the events featuring Katniss, the book reveals the backstory of the character later portrayed by Woody Harrelson.
Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak star in the film, playing Haymitch and Lenore Dove Baird, respectively. Francis Lawrence, the director of the previous four Hunger Games movies, is back to direct this installment.
Release Info
Lionsgate is set to release The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping in cinemas and IMAX on November 20, 2026.
