Jennifer Aniston recently discussed her beginnings as an actress on the Armchair Expert podcast. She fondly remembered her father, John Aniston, who passed away recently, and shared some of the acting advice he gave her.
John Aniston, famous for playing a character on Days of Our Lives for many years, cautioned his daughter about how challenging a career in acting can be.
Aniston recalled her dad advising her against pursuing acting, saying, “He’d tell me, ‘Don’t do this, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment.’ He wanted me to get a regular job – you know, something practical. But he also said that if you’re passionate about something, you should follow that passion.”
Jennifer Aniston has always admired her father and wanted to be like him, but she doesn’t believe her success is solely due to his influence. She explained that while having a famous parent might open some initial doors, talent and hard work are essential to maintain a career. Earlier this year, she told Vanity Fair that a big part of what drove her early on was wanting to earn her father’s praise.
“Always wanting to get Pop’s approval — it was the thing that drove me,” she said.
Before becoming famous as Rachel Green on the TV show Friends, Jennifer Aniston shared that she had previously declined a chance to join the cast of Saturday Night Live.
She told Dax Shepard she used to have a very high opinion of herself, but the reasons behind that confidence are complicated.
She recounted meeting Lorne Michaels in New York and briefly encountering Adam Sandler and David Spade. She then shared a feeling she had at the time, saying she wondered if women were being treated fairly on the show, which she described as heavily male-focused. She wished the environment had been more like it was during Gilda Radner’s time. She admitted she didn’t recall the specifics perfectly, but remembered that shortly after, the TV show ‘Friends’ became popular.
