As a dedicated follower of all things horror and fantasy, I must say that Jenna Ortega’s journey on the Beetlejuice sequel is nothing short of extraordinary. Having grown up watching Tim Burton classics, getting the chance to work alongside Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder in this iconic franchise feels like a dream come true.
Jenna Ortega has spoken about the moment she was spooked when Michael Keaton donned his famous Beetlejuice outfit on the set of their forthcoming fantasy-comedy horror film, Beetlejuice 2. Additionally, she talked about collaborating with Keaton and Winona Ryder, who reprises her role as Lydia Deetz in this sequel.
Jenna Ortega recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she opened up about the upcoming highly anticipated Beetlejuice sequel and recalled her on-set encounter with her co-star Michael Keaton. Fallon asked Ortega what it was like watching Keaton come on the film set in his character Beetlejuice costume, saying, “Does everyone get quiet, or do people cry? I would cry.”
On Wednesday, the actress remembered being startled by Keaton. She explained, “He sneaked up from behind while I was having a hair and makeup trial.” She also mentioned receiving a gentle tap on her shoulder, and when she looked around, “It definitely gave me a jump!”
Ortega went on discussing how the actor startled her, “He resembled more of a character saying, ‘Hello, I’m Michael,’ with pieces of mold flaking from his visage.”
In a subsequent conversation, the actress who starred in The Insidious: Chapter 2 admitted that she maintained a composed demeanor when initially encountering Keaton, but things became uncomfortable when they ran into each other off-set without hair and makeup. She humorously explained, “I reintroduced myself because I had forgotten we’d already been introduced.” Fallon jokingly retorted, “Well, you didn’t meet Michael Keaton; you met Beetlejuice.”
In a recent statement, The Finestkind star gushed about Michael Keaton, who played Batman in Batman Returns, calling him the “coolest.” She expressed her deep appreciation for working alongside Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, who reprised their roles as Lydia and Delia Deetz in the sequel. However, she also shared that she was initially “terrified” to work with these acting legends, admitting that it was something she never dreamed would happen in her wildest dreams.
In a chat with Collider, Jenna Ortega talked about the interview’s pressure of maintaining Tim Burton’s heritage while working on Beetlejuice 2. She admitted there is “indeed some weight” to deal with. Yet, Ortega shared that she has learned not to let this burden impact her, as working alongside Burton and being part of these fantasized worlds brings her immense joy.
Beetlejuice 2 will be released in theaters on September 6, 2024.
