As a devoted fan of Tim Burton’s whimsical world and his unique blend of horror, comedy, and fantasy, I am beyond excited about the upcoming sequel to Beetlejuice, titled simply Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Having grown up watching the original 1988 film, the opportunity to witness its continuation is like a dream come true, especially with Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder bringing their talents to the screen as Astrid Deetz and Lydia Deetz respectively.
In their latest interview, Jenna Ortega and her fellow actor Winona Ryder shared stories about the making of the sandstorm scene in the soon-to-be-released fantasy horror comedy titled Beetlejuice, which kicked off the Venice Film Festival on August 28. The two actresses will be portraying mother and daughter, Lydia Deetz and Astrid Deetz respectively, in Tim Burton’s eagerly awaited sequel to his iconic 1988 film.
Recently, as an ardent admirer, I found myself relishing every word spoken by Winona Ryder in her latest Entertainment Weekly interview. She shared fascinating insights into filming a scene featuring the iconic Sandworm, a terrifying creature from the original movie. Ryder eloquently explained that this particular shoot was a test of endurance, involving vast expanses of sand and relentless wind. Reflecting on the experience, she humorously remarked, “It’s no secret that running in the sand is a challenge; I often dream about it. So, you can imagine how it felt!”
In addition, her fellow actor, Jenna Ortega, also expressed her views on the real-life effects employed to construct the sandstorm sequence. Ortega told the media outlet it was a fantastic experience, further explaining, “Tim is excellent because he frequently provides references or visual aids such as pictures, drawings, or ideas that he has in mind.”
On a Wednesday, the actress spoke about how Burton shared his drawings of Sandworms with her. These fearsome creatures made their debut in Beetlejuice from 1988, which featured Barbara (portrayed by Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (played by Alec Baldwin), a couple who turned into ghosts post-death. Their goal was to exit their haunted house in Winter River, but instead, they ended up in a desert domain inhabited by these Sandworms.
In the preview for the upcoming sequel, the Sandworm resurfaces, causing trouble for Lydia and her daughter Astrid (played by Ortega) as they flee from it across the desert. The actress from Finestkind mentioned that they utilized a big wind machine to mimic the Sandworm’s actions, resulting in sand bursts appearing as they ran.
She mentioned that adopting this method significantly enhanced the realism of the experience. What’s interesting is that although they were dealing with clay worms, the results managed to create an authentic sense of the creatures pursuing them. The earth trembled beneath their feet, and objects seemed to shift around them.
In September 2024, Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2 will hit the big screen. The second installment finds the Deetz family returning to their Winter River residence following the demise of Charles Deetz. However, Lydia’s life takes an unexpected turn when her daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), stumbles upon a strange model of the town in the attic and unwittingly opens a gateway to the Afterlife, resulting in the resurrection of Betelgeuse, portrayed by Michael Keaton.
