Jenna Fischer recently disclosed some intriguing backstage details about “The Office,” revealing that Amy Adams almost missed out on the role of Katy Moore, the handbag saleswoman in the Season 1 episode “Hot Girl.” Fischer divulged that the casting team initially had reservations as they felt Adams bore a striking resemblance to herself.
On the “Office Ladies” podcast that she co-hosts with Angela Kinsey, Fischer shared an interesting tidbit: Adams wasn’t the first pick for the character Katy. Instead, another actress was chosen and filmed for a day, but they didn’t quite fit the role. Later, Adams was brought on board and immediately showed she was the ideal choice. Fischer reminisced about Adams, saying, “She slipped right into the role of Katy. She improvised a lot, and many of her lines actually ended up in the episode.
Initially, there were objections to choosing Adams for the role due to her likeness to Fischer. One commentator supposedly stated, “We can’t use her; she’s essentially Jenna version 2.” Despite this, Adams was eventually selected, and the writers decided to embrace the similarity by incorporating a scene in which Michael Scott (Steve Carell) calls Katy “Pam 6.0,” a lighthearted reference to the actual casting controversy.
Katy emerged as a beloved character, reappearing in the second season’s episodes titled “The Fire” and “Booze Cruise”, portraying Jim Halpert’s romantic interest. However, her narrative arc concluded when Jim chose to follow his feelings for Pam instead, which eventually resulted in their wedding during Season 6.
