Jay-Z is taking legal action against attorneys Tony Buzbee and David Fortney, as well as an unnamed client, following earlier allegations of sexual misconduct that were made against him.
A recently initiated lawsuit, filed in Alabama on March 3, alleges malicious prosecution, misuse of legal processes, and civil conspiracy towards all three defendants. As reported by People, the court documents show that Jay-Z (known as Shawn Carter) has additionally included a defamation claim against Jane Doe.
He’s pursuing compensatory, punitive, and presumed damages, as stated in the lawsuit. This lawsuit alleges that the initial sexual assault accusations were deliberately false and harmful. Furthermore, it suggests that the filing of this lawsuit was tactically timed to inflict the greatest possible damage on him.
The initial court case was initiated on October 20, 2024, claiming that Jay-Z and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs physically harmed a 13-year-old girl at an MTV Video Music Awards party in the year 2000.
On February 14, 2025, Buzbee and lawyer Antigone Curis chose to drop their case without any further legal proceedings. This dismissal is irreversible, as it’s considered a dismissal with prejudice – it can’t be re-filed.
In simpler terms, Jay-Z’s recent legal action claims that Ms. Doe and her attorneys attempted to extort him using fabricated information. The court documents indicate that Ms. Doe herself confessed to his representatives that “Carter (Jay-Z) did not assault her,” and that Mr. Buzbee encouraged her to proceed with the lawsuit in an attempt to receive a settlement.
In a conversation with PEOPLE, Buzbee dismissed the accusations. He stated that the fresh allegations echo those from the previous case in Los Angeles, which were similarly groundless. Just as the one in LA, this new case filed in Alabama lacks any legal foundation,” he explained.
In a statement, he mentioned, “Following my conversation with Jane Doe today, it seems the statements attributed to her in the lawsuit are either fabricated or were spoken by someone other than Jane Doe.” Additionally, Buzbee asserted that Jay-Z’s team was attempting to harass and coerce Jane Doe into withdrawing her accusations.
In December 2024, Jay-Z filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles against Buzbee, alleging civil extortion, defamation, and causing emotional distress. The judge decided that the defamation claim is strong enough to move forward to trial, but the extortion claim might be dropped.
Jay-Z asserts that unfounded accusations led to a loss of approximately $20 million in business deals for him, and inflicted significant emotional distress. Moreover, he believes that Buzbee deliberately initiated the initial lawsuit before the premiere of Blue Ivy’s movie, with the intention of tarnishing his reputation.
