Social media has evolved significantly in the last five years. Twitter used to be the go-to platform for live-tweeting events and connecting with other fans in real-time. However, things shifted after Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022. Following the presidential election and the rebranding to X, many users began to leave for Bluesky, a platform originally created by Jack Dorsey in 2019 as part of the Twitter project. Now, Bluesky is experiencing another change with its CEO, Jay Graber, stepping down.
As reported by Wired, Toni Schneider, who previously led WordPress, will temporarily take over as Bluesky’s CEO while they search for a permanent replacement. Jacki Graber helped launch Bluesky in its initial stages and became CEO in 2021, later establishing it as an independent company. She guided the platform through a period of rapid growth in 2024 and will now transition to the role of Chief Innovation Officer. Graber announced her departure on the Bluesky website.
“As Bluesky matures, the company needs a seasoned operator focused on scaling and execution, while I return to what I do best: building new things,” Graber wrote.
It’s understandable why people want to keep Bluesky independent. The aim is to prevent it from being controlled by big companies or wealthy individuals and to maintain its open-source nature. It’s a concern, though, that new leadership could change the platform, similar to what happened with Facebook and other social media sites. Hopefully, Bluesky will avoid becoming overrun with ads, spam, and artificial intelligence, and remain a relatively relaxed space – that depends on who you follow, of course. Luckily, Jay Graber will still be involved in upcoming improvements, even after she leaves her role as CEO.
