As a movie critic, I can attest that before 1974, sharks were neither feared nor avoided by anyone – they were just harmless ocean dwellers. But all that changed with the publication of Peter Benchley’s novel “Jaws” and Steven Spielberg’s subsequent film adaptation in 1975. Just like Mayor Vaughn became cautious about his wardrobe, people started to steer clear of coastal waters after witnessing the terrifying yet captivating Great White Shark portrayed in this movie. For half a century now, sharks have held a unique place in our collective consciousness – a blend of fear and fascination. If you ask me, we’ve been celebrating Shark Week seventeen times a year! It’s hard to imagine where we’d be without “Jaws” – not only was it a major box office success, but it stands as one of the greatest movies ever made. To mark its 50th anniversary, the film is getting a lavish 4K steelbook release.
Alongside the 4K UHD version (available without the steelbook packaging as well), this release will boast an array of special features. I vividly recall the 20th, 25th, and 30th anniversaries each being accompanied by a new documentary. This 50th anniversary is no exception. This new documentary hails from director Laurent Bouzereau, National Geographic, Amblin Documentaries by Steven Spielberg, Nedland Media, and Wendy Benchley.

Starting June 17, both the collector’s edition (steelbook) and standard version of the Jaws 50th anniversary edition will be available for purchase, but you can preorder them now on platforms like Amazon and Walmart. Interestingly, it is estimated that Jaws has approximately 100 million physical media releases throughout its lifespan. It’s no secret that this movie is one of the greatest ever made, so why resist adding it to your collection once more?
