Jason Momoa’s Epic Transformation: Lobo in Supergirl Revealed!

In a recent update, Jason Momoa has confirmed that he’s currently working on the “Supergirl” movie in London, and it’s been emphasized that the portrayal of the main character will stay true to its comic book origins.

Under James Gunn’s leadership at DC, Momoa has been chosen to portray Lobo in the DC Universe, implying that he will no longer be appearing as Aquaman. This role was previously associated with the Zack Snyder DCEU.

Filming Supergirl

On an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, during promotions for the upcoming Minecraft film, Jimmy highlighted that Jason Momoa is among the rare actors who has portrayed both a comic book hero and a villain in different roles.

At last, at last, at last,” said Momoa, reminiscing about the moment Zack Snyder chose him for a role. Originally, he believed it was for Lobo, his all-time favorite comic book character. “I own every Lobo comic. He’s always been my top pick.

Momoa added, “I’m right now working on Supergirl.”

Comic accurate look

Concerning how Jason Momoa will appear as Lobo in the DC Universe, there hasn’t been a formal first reveal, however, Momoa himself has given us a sneak peek of what he’ll look like.

“Rides a motorcycle, smokes cigars, loves Guinness… I mean come on dreadlocks,” said Momoa.

In a recent conversation with Ebaster, Momoa mentioned, “I’d rather not reveal too many details, but let me tell you, we resemble the character quite accurately, and he’s quite tough and grumpy. As for the bike, it’s definitely impressive.

How does Lobo fit with the Supergirl movie?

Intriguingly, specifics about Lobo’s role in the film remain a mystery, yet it’s worth noting that the original comic from which the movie is derived did feature Lobo. However, the editorial team at DC Comics advised against his inclusion in the writer’s narrative.

In the world of Supergirl, both the movie and comic, being set in space, it’s quite feasible to imagine connections with characters like Lobo, an extraterrestrial bounty hunter. It’s possible that Jason Momoa’s Lobo and Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, could one day appear on Earth for a confrontation.

What is Supergirl about?

The movie partially draws inspiration from the 2022 comic book “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which was beautifully illustrated by Bilquis Evely.

The plot follows Ruthye Knoll, a youthful extraterrestrial combatant, as she embarks on a cosmic adventure alongside Supergirl. Their objective is to track down Krem of the Yellow Hills, a malevolent character who was responsible for Ruthye’s father’s demise. It has been hinted that Krypto, who makes his debut in James Gunn’s adaptation of Superman this summer, will play a part in these events.

At a DC panel event in 2023, Gunn explained the contrast between Superman, who was nurtured by loving parents on Earth since infancy, and Supergirl, who was born and raised on a distant planet, Krypton. For her first 14 years, she witnessed countless brutal deaths. When she arrived on Earth as a young girl, she was significantly tougher than the usual portrayal of Supergirl.

Cast

Joining Jason Momoa as Lobo, the cast also features Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts portraying the antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz in the role of Zor-El, and Emily Beecham playing Alura.

Or, more concisely:
Jason Momoa plays Lobo, while Milly Alcock is Supergirl, Eve Ridley is Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts takes on the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz assumes the role of Zor-El, and Emily Beecham portrays Alura.
