Jamie Lee Curtis is continuing to share her thoughts on plastic surgery, explaining why she feels it ultimately had a negative impact on her well-being.
The actress revealed she got cosmetic surgery when she was 25, and she’s regretted it ever since, talking openly about the experience for years.
Now 67, Curtis shared that her decision stemmed from experiences early in her career. She recounted a remark made on a movie set during a 60 Minutes interview, explaining it had stuck with her.
While filming the 1985 movie Perfect, a cinematographer made a hurtful comment about her looks, which deeply embarrassed her. She remembered being only 25 at the time and feeling particularly vulnerable. After the film finished, she chose to have plastic surgery.
The decision didn’t make Curtis feel any better, and she quickly wished she’d made a different choice. “Looking back, it wasn’t the right move for someone my age,” she explained. “I regretted it instantly, and honestly, I still do,” she said.
After going through that, Curtis now openly talks about unrealistic beauty expectations and the impact of cosmetic surgery.
She now uses her public voice to encourage women to embrace their natural selves. “I want women to know they are beautiful and perfect just as they are,” she explained, emphasizing that she personally didn’t feel surgery was the right path for her.
In subsequent interviews, Curtis became increasingly critical of the beauty industry. She told The Guardian that the pressure to conform to certain beauty standards has negatively impacted people’s self-perception. She stated, “I think we’ve lost a couple of generations’ sense of what real people look like.” Curtis also expressed concern that filters, cosmetic fillers, and other modern technologies are exacerbating the issue, as more and more people strive for an unrealistic, artificial appearance.
Curtis explained how quickly people can get caught up in comparing themselves to filtered images. She noted that seeing a before-and-after photo makes it tempting to think the filtered version ‘looks better,’ but questioned what that even means. She believes unrealistic beauty standards are constantly being promoted.
Jamie Lee Curtis has previously discussed her feelings about Botox, expressing skepticism during an interview on TODAY. She explained, “Botox can reduce wrinkles, but it can also make you look unnatural.” Curtis shared with Hoda Kotb that she’s experienced this firsthand and believes an excessive focus on appearance can be all-consuming.
Her beliefs have also impacted her family. Curtis has shared that she encouraged her daughters to embrace their natural faces and avoid cosmetic surgery, believing that once someone changes their appearance with procedures, they can’t fully reverse it.
