James Van Der Beek Reveals Why He Doesn’t Let His Children Watch Dawson’s Creek: ‘I Don’t Think My Kids Need to…’

As a dedicated follower who appreciates the raw honesty of celebrities, I admire James Van Der Beek for his thoughtful approach to raising his children. His decision to shield them from Dawson’s Creek, a show that catapulted him to fame, speaks volumes about his desire to protect their perception of him and maintain a sense of normalcy in their family life.

James Van Der Beek prefers not to have his children watch Dawson’s Creek, the well-known teen romance where he starred as Dawson Leery, an ambitious filmmaker with a love for cinema. Dawson Leery was famous not only for his Spielberg obsession but also for his close friendships and complicated romantic relationships. Despite playing a teenager dealing with puberty on the show, Van Der Beek stated that he doesn’t want his kids to see him in that role.

On a talk show called The View on December 4, the 47-year-old actor openly talked about his recent colorectal cancer diagnosis and shared insights into his family life. Looking back at his time on Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek mentioned that he doesn’t allow his kids to watch the popular teen show.

He stated that, while he finds the show excellent and believes other children could enjoy it, he personally does not want his own kids watching him act out adolescence on screen. That’s his firm position.

Recognizing its tremendous popularity, the actor from Varsity Blues stated that the show was a thoughtful series featuring characters who strived to make good decisions and articulated their efforts to accomplish this effectively, discussing their challenges along the way.

Despite his best attempts, Van Der Beek found it challenging to completely protect his kids from the influence of Dawson Leery. In the year 2022, he disclosed that, in a moment of conflict, his oldest child had even used a meme depicting his Dawson’s Creek character against him.

Van Der Beek’s family consists of six children with his wife Kimberly: Olivia (age 14), Joshua (age 12), Annabel (age 10), Emilia (age 8), Gwendolyn (age 6), and Jeremiah (age 3). The pair, who tied the knot in 2010, had their first child during that very year.

In an interview with People for their November issue, Van Der Beek shared that just one out of his six children were intentionally conceived, but he considers the rest as a profound blessing, understanding that many couples are unable to share this joy.

Prior to receiving his cancer diagnosis, the actor chose to have a sterilization procedure, known as a vasectomy. In their married life, Van Der Beek and Kimberly experienced five miscarriages, including two that were close to fatal, late in pregnancy.

“We’ve weathered a lot of storms together,” Kimberly shared.

Speaking about her husband’s fight against cancer, she characterized the last year as exceptionally challenging, yet it instilled in them a deep appreciation for life and an ability to see beauty in every facet of existence.
