As a dedicated fan with a penchant for Marvel’s intricate narratives and a soft spot for the enigmatic Vision, I find myself enthralled by the news of Ultron’s return in the upcoming series, “Vision Quest.” The prospect of James Spader lending his voice to this menacing AI once more is music to my ears. The original clash between Vision and Ultron in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” was a pivotal moment in the MCU, setting off a chain reaction that culminated in the Accords and the infamous rift among Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
There’s been a lot of buzz about a potential spin-off series for “WandaVision” centered around the character of Vision, with many fans wondering who or what might make an appearance. Interestingly enough, Vision, portrayed by Paul Bettany, has had relatively few encounters with traditional villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Granted, Thanos took his life, but for the most part, he’s been more about team-ups than tangling with foes. However, there was an exception: his debut in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” In this film, Vision had a significant confrontation with the villainous AI character called Ultron, voiced by James Spader. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it looks like we’ll be seeing Ultron and Spaser return for this spin-off series.
In the 2015 film, the creation of Tony Stark, known as Ultron, posed a particularly difficult challenge for the Avengers. The consequences of his plan ultimately resulted in the devastation of Sokovia, leading to the events depicted in “Captain America: Civil War,” where heroes found themselves at odds with one another. Although Ultron appeared in “What If…?”, it was not voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch (replacing his original voice actor).
In the upcoming series titled “Vision Quest,” we find the rebuilt Vision, now in all-white, embarking on a journey to discover purpose after the tragic events depicted in “WandaVision.” It’s likely that this new Vision will encounter remnants of Ultron’s programming, potentially leading to the resurrection of Ultron. This intriguing layer of emotion adds depth to the narrative. The struggle between Vision’s human-like qualities and his robotic nature is a key aspect of his character, exploring what it truly means to exist.
Running Vision Quest is Terry Matalas who is no stranger to sentient robotics. He wrote for Star Trek: Picard season two and showran the wildly successful and beloved third season. According to reports, the Vision Quest series will begin filming in England in early 2025. In the meanwhile, we have another WandaVision spin-off, Agatha All Along, on the way September 18.
