As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of comic book-based gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and anticipation at the prospect of James McAvoy returning as Professor X in the MCU.
The appearance of Deadpool and Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has significantly expanded the presence of mutants and the X-Men. Although mutants were previously introduced, the X-Men were not substantially referenced until the most recent Deadpool film.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart, first emerged with a technical introduction. This was in the movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness“. However, he turned out to be a version from another reality and ended up being slain by the Scarlet Witch in the end.
It’s whispered that “Avengers: Secret Wars” will gather a diverse array of characters spanning multiple universes from all live-action Marvel productions. Additionally, a fresh take on the X-Men in live-action is soon to be unveiled.
Since Professor X is such a well-known and influential mutant within the X-Men team, fans are eagerly anticipating his presence in both upcoming projects. It would be ideal if James McAvoy continues to portray this character.
In an interview with Buzzfeed UK, McAvoy talked about his most impactful characters, mentioning that it’s possible that Mr. Tumnus from “The Chronicles of Narnia” and Charles Xavier might be played by someone else in the upcoming Netflix “Narnia” remake and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “X-Men” movies. Yet, he left open the possibility that he could reprise his role as Professor X in the MCU.
What a thoughtful gesture! However, I have a feeling that we might see different actors portraying characters like Mr. Tumnus from Narnia and Charles Xavier from the X-Men.
For eight years, James McAvoy took on the role of Professor X, starting with the movie “X-Men: First Class” in 2011 and ending with “Dark Phoenix” in 2019. Although his character was mentioned in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” due to his twin sister Cassandra Nova serving as a main antagonist, Professor X himself did not make an appearance in that film.
