Despite your fondness for the initial X-Men films, it’s challenging to argue against the fact that Cyclops, portrayed by James Marsden as Scott Summers, was not given a fair representation. In the first movie, Marsden’s performance as the leader of the X-Men was quite accurate. However, he took a backseat significantly in X2 and met an untimely end in X-Men: The Last Stand. A time travel plot reversed his death in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but only for a brief appearance. Fans have long been hoping to see Marsden unleash his optic blasts on screen again. Recently, Marvel Studios confirmed that Marsden will indeed return in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and he has now shared insights about his anticipated comeback for the first time with Vanity Fair. Here’s what he revealed:
I’m thrilled to have you aboard as we embark on something monumental. For two decades, I’ve heard endless questions like, “When will you return? When will you return?” It feels surreal, almost unbelievable. If they held off a bit longer, I might have had a hard time fitting back into the costume. Nonetheless, it’s been an exhilarating experience. Truly, it has. This reunion to a role that catapulted me into stardom is heartwarming. It was my debut project in the events industry, and the character is deeply cherished, an icon from the comics. Stepping back into this role feels extraordinary.
Eagerly anticipating that the Russo Brothers, known for their longtime love of X-Men, will offer Ian McKellen’s character a more prominent role than previous directors have. Fingers crossed, we hope they provide him an opportunity to truly demonstrate his leadership abilities and shine. Marvel recently announced that McKellen, along with other X-Men veterans like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming, will reprise their roles in a publicity stunt spanning a day. Interestingly absent from this cast reveal were the female X-Men, notably Halle Berry as Storm and Famke Janssen as Jean Grey. Yet we remain optimistic. This could very well be McKellen’s final appearance as Cyclops, as Marvel Studios intends to recast the X-Men for their first MCU film following Secret Wars. Here’s hoping, for this one last time, he gets a fitting farewell.
