James Gunn has said his Peacemaker Season 2 is a direct sequel to his Superman movie.
Rather than developing Superman’s narrative with substance, Gunn focuses on surprising moments, unsophisticated comedy, and expressing political viewpoints.

Gunn Says Peacemaker Is the Superman Sequel
In his own words, Gunn previously described Peacemaker as following directly from Superman:
I consider Season 2 of Peacemaker to be a direct continuation of the story. Superman plays a significant role, directly leading into the events of Peacemaker; it’s important to remember this show is intended for mature audiences. Superman sets the stage for everything else happening in the DCU during this season of Peacemaker. We’re going to see a lot of familiar faces and guest stars, including characters we’ve already met in Superman.
Gunn even went as far as saying Peacemaker Season 2 might be the work he’s most proud of:
I can’t imagine enjoying anything more than this season of Peacemaker. It’s truly my favorite thing I’ve ever worked on. I absolutely love it.

DC Characters in Prison Rape Scene
The latest episode really showcases Gunn’s often-debated preferences. In Episode 6, we see Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in a prison scene alongside Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr.
During their conversation, Lex casually remarks:
Look, I’m stuck in Belle Reeve, and honestly, it’s pretty wild. Every night, I’m forced to listen to this huge guy – seriously, he’s massive – with skin that looks like a dragon’s, basically… well, let’s just say he’s getting *very* intimate with a smaller guy who looks like he stepped out of a cartoon. It’s happening right next door in the cell beside me, and it’s… a lot to process.
The scene suggests that DC characters-thought to be Killer Croc and potentially Doctor Phosphorus-are engaging in sexual assault within a prison setting. James Gunn approved this dialogue, effectively including this type of material in what he describes as the ongoing story of Superman.

A Pattern of Poor Taste
This isn’t a one-time issue. Gunn previously faced criticism for giving the go-ahead to the John Cena Peacemaker emote in Fortnite, which Epic Games later removed after players pointed out it featured imagery reminiscent of Nazi symbolism. This happened in a game with millions of young players-even though Gunn maintained that Peacemaker “isn’t for children.”
Now, the same “Superman sequel” contains casual rape references involving iconic DC characters.
What’s Next for Gunn’s DCU?
As Supergirl and Clayface are set to appear, and with Gunn both writing and directing Man of Tomorrow, it’s becoming obvious that Gunn’s DCU is about more than just traditional heroes. It seems to prioritize surprising twists, flawed characters, and complex themes-even if it means altering the established history of those characters.
