So, I checked HBO Max’s numbers, and it looks like James Gunn’s Superman took another little dip in the streaming charts during its second full week, from September 29th to October 5th. It’s a shame, I was hoping it would hold stronger, but that’s how streaming goes, I guess.
According to Nielsen, the reboot didn’t break into the top 10 overall, but reached #7 on the movies chart with 258 million minutes watched.
Okay, so last week we saw a huge 569 million minutes streamed, but this week? It dropped off fast. It really shows that initial excitement died down pretty quickly after everyone checked it out.
Okay, so looking at the streaming numbers, it seems like Black Adam is still outperforming Superman – again! Black Adam racked up a whopping 333 million minutes watched in just the same period. It’s the second time now that Dwayne Johnson’s film has beaten Superman in terms of viewership.

Black Adam Again Beats Superman
As a huge cinema fan, I was really excited about James Gunn’s Superman – it was supposed to be a fresh start for DC, completely wiping the slate clean after the previous team gave us Black Adam. But honestly, looking at the streaming numbers tells a different story, and it’s making me rethink things.
When it premiered, Black Adam outperformed Superman, racking up 632 million minutes of viewing time in its first three days, compared to Superman’s 513 million minutes.
James Gunn’s movie briefly led in viewership with 569 million minutes watched during its first full week. Although Black Adam didn’t initially appear on the charts due to minimum viewing requirements, it rebounded strongly with 333 million minutes in its second week, surpassing Superman in popularity.
Nielsen HBO Max ratings Superman vs Black Adam:
- First 3 days: 513 / 632
- First full week: 569 / NA
- Second week: 258 / 333

A Short-Lived Boost for the New DCU
I’ve been watching the numbers closely, and it’s pretty obvious what happened with Superman. Every time Black Adam briefly lost some steam, Superman would jump ahead, but then quickly fall back down again. It seems like the initial interest in James Gunn’s new Superman movie was just a quick spike of curiosity, not a sign that people were really sticking with it long-term.
Combined with disappointing ticket sales and declining viewership for other DC projects led by James Gunn (like Peacemaker Season 2, which won’t get a third season), the recent drop in ratings suggests the revamped DC Universe isn’t holding audience interest over the long term.
After the initial hype fades, viewers aren’t sticking around.
