After six months since its release, it’s clear that while James Gunn’s Superman wasn’t a failure, it didn’t quite live up to expectations.
According to a recent report by Puck News’ Matthew Belloni, a former editor at The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros.’ superhero reboot didn’t perform particularly well internationally and earned a respectable, but not outstanding, $617 million globally.
The film earned a significant $356 million in the US, starting with a $125 million opening weekend. However, audiences outside the US weren’t as enthusiastic.
The film’s global earnings weren’t just lower than other superhero movies—the report highlights that it even underperformed titles like How to Train Your Dragon, the F1 movie, and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.
Not exactly what you’d expect for the launch of a brand-new DC Universe.

Global Audiences Rejected Gunn’s Lighter, Politicized Take
The film’s disappointing performance in international markets confirms what those familiar with the project and fans abroad have been reporting since the initial trailers were released: James Gunn’s Superman just isn’t connecting with audiences.
Zack Snyder’s darker, more epic style in the DC Universe resonated with international audiences, particularly in China. However, James Gunn’s approach was perceived as a lighthearted restart that heavily emphasized political themes.
Many international and immigrant fans have expressed concern about a scene in the movie where Superman leaves an Asian civilian on a rooftop during a crisis. They felt this moment was hurtful and disrespectful, appearing to mock the idea of heroism rather than celebrate it.
The story’s conflict between made-up countries felt like a disguised critique of U.S. foreign policy, which often doesn’t resonate with audiences in superhero movies outside of America.
Gunn’s Lex Luthor, a character Gunn says he relates to more than Superman, commits a murder in front of Superman, leaving Superman unable to intervene.

Snyder’s Superman Still Resonates Globally
It’s not just about tone, it’s about storytelling.
Zack Snyder’s Superman was presented as a positive symbol of immigration and a legendary hero. Some viewers felt James Gunn’s version flipped this idea on its head. By altering the story of Jor-El and prioritizing humor over a clear narrative, the new film disappointed many who connected with the original meaning of Superman’s beginnings – particularly the confusing choice to have him wear his family crest despite knowing its significance.
Online fans, particularly in Asia, have been very direct about what they want: the intense storylines, exciting action, and impressive visuals of Zack Snyder’s DC movies. While critics were often split on films like Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, they were hugely popular with audiences around the world, especially in China, where both films did very well.
Gunn’s Superman didn’t get that response—because it didn’t offer the same sense of grandeur.

The Era of Superhero Domination is Over
It’s becoming clear that superhero movies are now competing with all other big franchises. What really counts isn’t just the superhero brand, but how well the movie is made and how engaging the characters are.
Belloni observes that the days of superhero movies automatically earning a billion dollars are over. While upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are still anticipated, it’s clear the superhero genre isn’t as dominant as it once was.
And unless DC recalibrates, audiences—especially outside America—may continue to check out.
