Sasha Calle debuted as Supergirl in the 2023 film The Flash. A dedicated Supergirl movie had been planned since 2018 as part of the DC Extended Universe, but those plans were revised when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022. The film was officially greenlit in January 2023 and is based on the comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2021-2022) by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

Filming for Supergirl began in January 2024 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in London, and continued in Scotland through May. Milly Alcock was cast in January, and Marc Gillespie joined as director in May. The film is scheduled for release in the US on June 26, 2026, as part of the first phase of the DCU, titled ‘Gods and Monsters’.
