I just saw the newest Supergirl trailer, called “Home,” and it premiered during the Puppy Bowl! It gave us a really great look at the show, and it definitely feels like it’s embracing that same kind of heartfelt, found-family vibe we’ve come to expect from James Gunn’s work.
The scene begins on Krypton, introducing Kara Zor-El with her parents shortly before the planet is destroyed. A surprising moment occurs when Kara first encounters Krypto, but not as the powerful dog everyone knows – he’s just a puppy at this point.
From there, the footage shifts into shots pulled from the recent trailer. Watch below.

James Gunn Goes Back to the “Baby” Well
The Puppy Bowl ad showcases a noticeable trend in projects led by James Gunn – a knack for creative and memorable content.
Gunn has consistently leaned into “baby” or juvenile characters as emotional anchors:
- Superman featured Baby Joey.
- The Guardians of the Galaxy films made Baby Groot a central hook.
- Now Supergirl introduces Krypto as a puppy during Kara’s earliest moments.
It’s a common approach: start by creating a warm feeling, show someone as harmless, and then introduce conflict and danger. The new ‘Home’ ad uses this strategy perfectly.
What the Spot Sets Up for Supergirl
The upcoming film Supergirl tells the story of Kara Zor-El, who is sent on a desperate journey through space after a personal tragedy. Still grieving and wary of others, Kara joins forces with an unexpected ally to pursue both revenge and a sense of justice.
The Puppy Bowl preview strongly suggests that Kara’s backstory – and her connection to Krypto – will be the heart of her story.
Cast and Creative Team
Milly Alcock plays the lead role of both Supergirl and Kara Zor-El. The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa.
Craig Gillespie directed the film, based on a script by Ana Nogueira, and Peter Safran and James Gunn served as producers.
As a film buff, I’m really excited about the team working on this! Rob Hardy is handling the cinematography, which is fantastic – his work is always stunning. Neil Lamont is designing the production, and I know he’ll create a really immersive world. Tatiana S. Riegel is editing, and she’s a master of pacing. Anna B. Sheppard is doing the costumes, and I’m expecting incredible detail there. Geoffrey Baumann is in charge of the visual effects, so we’re in for some amazing sights, and the music will be composed by the brilliant Ramin Djawadi – seriously, that’s a dream team!
Release Date
The movie Supergirl will premiere in theaters and IMAX across North America on June 26, 2026. It will begin rolling out internationally on June 24, and Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing the film.
I have to admit, the Puppy Bowl always gets me, but it feels like Gunn is hoping a sweet, innocent moment – something adorable like puppies – will grab our attention before things get really intense. It’s a bit of a strategy, isn’t it? He’s counting on that ‘aww’ factor to draw us in before everything goes wild.
