Well, look at that — Forbes got something wrong? Shocking, I know.
Forbes Claims a $200 Million Budget
A recent profile of Milly Alcock in Forbes Australia reports that the Supergirl movie is being made with a $200 million budget. If accurate, the film would need to earn around $500 million worldwide to cover its costs. The article suggests the writer has special access, possibly due to both Milly Alcock and director Craig Gillespie being Australian.
As a big movie fan, I’ve noticed something frustrating about Forbes lately. It seems like they publish articles from pretty much anyone, and a lot of what’s presented as news or insight is really just someone’s opinion pretending to be expert analysis. It’s getting harder to find reliable information there, honestly.

James Gunn Shoots It Down
Forbes wrote:
A unique blend of innocence and confidence has marked Milly Alcock’s quick ascent to stardom. In just five years, she’s gone from being relatively unknown in Sydney to gaining international acclaim with her role in House of the Dragon, and is now set to play Supergirl in a major new DC film. The $200 million Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be directed by Australian filmmaker Craig Gillespie.
A fan immediately ran to Gunn on Threads to confirm it. Gunn replied:
“Not even a little bit true.”
It turns out the reported figure is inaccurate. We don’t know the actual number, but Gunn likely wouldn’t have objected unless the difference was significant. He also previously disputed earlier reports about the Superman movie’s budget, which several sources, including Forbes, later showed were closer to $350 million.

Superman’s Profit Debate Still Matters
There has also been the question if Gunn’s Superman was a financial success.
As I mentioned recently, the answer is quite simple: the studio is releasing the next Minecraft game just two weeks after Man of Tomorrow.

Can Supergirl Break the Streak?
It’s been a while since Hollywood had a hit female superhero film – the last one was Zack Snyder’s Wonder Woman. James Gunn’s Superman didn’t perform well overseas, and the upcoming Supergirl movie seems to have a similar lighthearted and silly style to other projects in Gunn’s DC Universe.
The movie’s success might depend on Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Lobo. While his first Aquaman film was a hit, the sequel didn’t perform well. Reports suggest the filmmakers were so pleased with Momoa as Lobo that they increased his role in the movie. There’s also talk that David Corenswet has been added as Superman.
Whether that’s enough to lift Supergirl is another question entirely.
Release Info
The new movie Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie, will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. DCU will be previewing the film at CCXP this weekend.
