James Gunn’s Blood-Free Superman: A New Hope in the DC Universe?

James Gunn has removed the gore or violent elements from the latest Superman promotional video starring David Corenswet as the new Steel Man.

In this presentation, you’ll find both the main video and its preview, where the blood has been carefully omitted during the scene when Superman summons Krypto, lies in the snow, and whistles for him.

In the trailer, Superman is coughing up blood but not in the spot.

Why was the blood removed?

The reason behind the recent edit in the thread isn’t clear at this point, but it might be due to two possibilities: either the bloody scene could be deemed too intense for television (given that similar scenes were aired during NFL games on Sunday), or perhaps James Gunn has made changes to Superman and eliminated the blood-related footage.

I prefer it when there’s less or no violence, and I find this version much more appealing compared to the trailer. The trailer didn’t sit well with me; this one feels significantly more optimistic instead (you can read my review of the trailer here where I wasn’t particularly pleased).

Gunn makes a change from the Christopher Reeve / John Williams score on the guitar, which I find unpleasant. The scene appears to be more polished compared to the trailer, in my opinion. Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor seems improved. Could Gunn work his magic on Nathan Fillion next? Check it out below.

Release info

On the 11th of July, 2025, James Gunn’s “Superman” is set to premiere. The film stars both David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane.

In typical James Gunn fashion, he reinvents the classic superhero within the freshly conceptualized DC world, combining thrilling action, humor, and emotional depth. This portrayal of Superman is motivated by empathy and a deep trust in humanity’s inherent goodness.
