James Gunn has spoken up again, and perhaps it would have been wiser to remain silent. But, that’s just typical James Gunn being himself, isn’t it?
The current issue centers on his recent statements about featuring two Batman characters, which seem inconsistent with his approach to Superman.
So, James Gunn is suggesting that having two Batman characters in a project is acceptable, but not two Superman characters? The real reason seems to be that two Batman characters are allowed if one of those films financially outperforms your own movie.
Superman & Lois TV canceled with Gunn’s DCU announcement
Just to give you some background, the Superman & Lois TV show ended its run right around the time James Gunn became head of the DCU and revealed his plans for a new Superman movie.
The team behind Superman & Lois originally planned for the show to run for several seasons, but it was unexpectedly canceled. However, most viewers understand why that happened.
What did James Gunn say?
During a conversation with Brandon Davis, Gunn addressed the existence of two different Batman portrayals – one from Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson, and another in Brave and the Bold – assuring listeners that audiences won’t be confused by having two versions.
You know, it’s strange to me how dedicated fans often say, ‘I get this, but most people won’t,’ or ‘Casual fans just won’t understand.’ But honestly, it’s the opposite. You, the hardcore fans, are the ones missing the point. The average person always gets it.
Make it make sense
This feels like another questionable decision from James Gunn. He’s justifying the idea of having two different Batmans in the DC Universe, yet he canceled Superman & Lois? I strongly believe Gunn would eliminate Matt Reeves’ projects if he had the chance, just to create his own versions.
Everyone knows James Gunn prefers Robert Pattinson to play Batman in the DCU, but reports suggest Matt Reeves doesn’t agree. However, after seeing Gunn’s Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker, is it really surprising Reeves feels that way? It makes you wonder what Gunn’s vision for Batman would even be like.
From what I understand, people are already worried. The big question is: will James Gunn have sufficient time to launch his unique vision for Batman before Warner Bros. Discovery is sold???
