James Gunn Was Recently Mistaken for – Believe It or Not – Zack Snyder!

As a die-hard fan of comic book adaptations, I can’t help but feel a mix of amusement and nostalgia when I reflect on the journey of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and its transformation into the DC Universe (DCU). Having witnessed the rise and fall of the DCEU, and now seeing the birth of the DCU under the guidance of James Gunn, it’s fascinating to observe how the past continues to shape our future.

To begin with, it’s clear that Marvel took the initiative, yet DC swiftly responded by establishing their own fictional universe through the DCEU. A director named Zack Snyder, who had previously worked on comic book adaptations, was enlisted to spearhead and guide the DCEU. The initial stages were promising, but a string of problems, questionable decisions, and underperforming films made it evident that the DCEU was not progressing in a positive direction.

After Snyder departed, the DCEU continued for a while, but eventually James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired, and rather than expanding upon the shaky foundations of the DC Universe, they opted to begin anew.

Instead of the DCEU fading into history, Gunn and Safran have launched the new DC Universe (DCU), which appears to be a compelling storyline that could potentially challenge Marvel’s dominance when it fully launches next year. However, as this report will show, remnants of the DCEU still persist!

In a recent chat with Josh Horowitz, James Gunn dished out some fascinating tidbits. You’ve likely heard about some of these details from our past reports, but this time we have an intriguing tale to share – one that’s less formal and more enjoyable than the previous ones.

But, among the things we found from this interview was this one as well:

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Chronicle – This is a 2024 documentary focusing on the life of the late Christopher Reeve, initially screened at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2024. Following its premiere, it had a limited theater run in the U.S., partnering with Fathom Events on September 21 and 25, 2024. The film then expanded to wide release across North America on October 11. It’s intriguing to note that there were reports of an early showing before or after the official Sundance premiere, which certainly adds a touch of humor to the situation.

Although James Gunn and Zack Snyder physically differ, there’s a chance they might have been confused due to their shared role as heads of the DC(E)U at some point. Snyder, as previously mentioned, was the inaugural leader of the DCEU, aiming to build a more intricate, somber universe similar to his other works. Some of these films were strong, but there were also many errors made. Tragically, while working on Justice League, Snyder experienced a personal loss, which ultimately led to the project’s collapse.

For a while, the DCEU continued its course, but it was clearly struggling and after James Gunn was appointed to direct The Suicide Squad, he was quickly offered the position of overseeing the new cinematic universe. This rebranded DCU is now in his capable hands, and the future – or rather, the tale that will be told – remains to be seen.

Snyder certainly left a mark on the history of comic book films and while Gunn will most certainly head in a different direction, this story shows how the past constantly influences the future and how such situations can often make up for a very funny story at one point in time, like it happened here.
