James Gunn is once again addressing DC fans, this time with a request: please share your thoughts with filmmakers respectfully and avoid speaking as if you represent all fans. He encourages honest opinions, but asks people to remember they aren’t speaking for everyone.
He advised that when asking a filmmaker to create something, it’s better to express your request as a personal preference – using “I” instead of “we.” He explained that a genuine, individual desire carries more weight than a request framed as if it represents everyone’s feelings. In other words, be honest about what you want!

James Gunn shared his thoughts following extensive online debate about Batman’s costume in upcoming DC films. He’s noticed fans frequently offer suggestions for the next Batsuit, and these often come across as expectations from the entire fanbase.
Gunn clarified that’s not true. He pointed out that people have diverse preferences, and often assume their own views are universal.
According to comments Gunn made directly to fans online, the blue and grey color scheme for Batman’s suit is the most popular request. However, Gunn emphasized that he considers the character’s personality, the story, and the actor portraying him to be more important than the suit’s design. He stated, “The most requested thing would be the blue & grey. Then the yellow around the bat… But all of those things I find less important than the character himself, the writing, & the person who plays him.”
Gunn also noted that even the most requested design isn’t actually popular with everyone. He clarified that the design people ask for most often is also the one a lot of people dislike.
He explained that even the most popular choices, like the blue and grey color scheme, are almost equally disliked by others. The next two most requested options face the same issue – a lot of people don’t want them either. He emphasized that decisions should be based on what best serves the individual movie and its story.
The response highlights how much disagreement can exist among fans, even about small things. It also clarifies why James Gunn is asking fans to use “I want” instead of “we want.” In large fan communities, people often speak as if they speak for everyone, which can sometimes feel demanding or presumptuous. Gunn is encouraging fans to remember that their individual thoughts are more valuable when expressed genuinely.
