Prior to the launch of the DCU, James Gunn expressed his intention not to be solely responsible for writing and directing all projects. However, he surprisingly took on the role of both writer and director for the initial DCU release, “Superman,” which turned out to be a significant success. Now, it appears that Gunn might be committed to penning and directing future installments focusing on Superman. In a recent tease, Gunn hinted at working on another major Superman movie in the DCU. However, he clarified that it wouldn’t be a direct “Superman” sequel but rather something else featuring the cherished character. Although we still don’t know the details of the project, we do know that Gunn will also assume the director’s chair for the film. David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, confirmed in an earnings call that James Gunn would write and direct the next installment in the “Super-Family” series for the DCU.
It seems that the only information given about James Gunn’s upcoming project in the DCU is that it will be part of the Super-Family series, implying appearances by Superman and Supergirl. There’s a possibility that new members from this family could also be introduced. One such character might be Superboy, who is genetically linked to both Lex Luthor and Superman, making him essentially their son. However, the details are not yet clear, as more information may not be available for some time.
Upcoming for DCU includes Season 2 of Peacemaker, followed by Supergirl, and a TV series based on Lanterns. A Clayface movie is also in development. Given the success of Superman, it’s likely that DCU and Warner Bros. Discovery will want to bring David Corenswet’s character back soon. We’ll have to wait and see what James Gunn’s next superhero film entails, but with him as both writer and director, we’re certain we won’t be disappointed when it’s released.
