Many fans consider Superman the most powerful hero in the DC Universe, but James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, suggests that might not be true, even within the Justice League. Gunn recently told Howard Stern on the radio that a Green Lantern could actually defeat Superman. Stern, a longtime DC Comics enthusiast, has always believed this, and Gunn agreed, calling Green Lantern “pretty powerful.” This raises the question of whether this idea aligns with how both characters’ powers are usually portrayed in the comics.
Superman and Green Lanterns are usually allies, working together as members of the Justice League. He’s teamed up with well-known Green Lanterns like Hal Jordan and John Stewart, who will be featured in the new *Lanterns* series, and even had clashes with Guy Gardner in a *Superman* comic. He considers Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz friends as well. While Green Lantern rings aren’t technically magic – they run on willpower – their energy affects Superman similarly to magic. Along with Kryptonite, magic is one of the few things that can really challenge him.
Green Lanterns have a key weakness compared to Kryptonians like Superman. Their power rings need to be recharged every day. Superman also gains power from the sun, but he can go much longer than 24 hours without needing a recharge if he avoids yellow sunlight. This has led to speculation that James Gunn might be hinting at a showdown between Superman and a Green Lantern (or multiple Lanterns) in the new DC Universe. Many comic book fans would be thrilled to see this battle happen in a movie. Ideally, if such a fight occurs, it won’t involve one of the most well-known Green Lanterns.
