James Gunn Teases Native American Character for PEACEMAKER Season 2, Which DC Character Might He Be?

As a long-time comic book enthusiast and Native American history aficionado, I find this new character tease from James Gunn for season two of Peacemaker particularly intriguing! From what we can gather so far, it seems we’re looking at an older, male-presenting Native American character. This immediately narrows down our options in terms of female Native American heroes that could be introduced later on.

James Gunn, one of the co-heads at DC Studios, recently posted a sneak peek photo from the set of season 2 of “Peacemaker.” The image features a new character, a Native American man seated by a campfire. From the single picture, it’s hard to tell much more. However, there are several Native American characters in DC Comics that could potentially be this mystery figure.

Who might this be? #Peacemaker

What we can tell from this image is that the character is male-presenting, and appears to be older. So that means we’re going to have to wait for female Native American heroes like Dawnstar for later projects. Since Peacemaker is set in the present day, we’re eliminating Western DC Comics heroes like Pow-Wow Smith, Brave Bow, and Tomahawk. Also, he’s probably not the World War I hero Johnny Cloud either. But here are our guesses as to who we think he may actually be when Peacemaker season two rolls around.

Apache Chief/Longshadow

Back in the day, when I was just a kid, watching cartoons on Saturday mornings, it wasn’t always the comic book characters that grabbed my attention. One of the most memorable ones for me was Apache Chief, a Native American hero who was actually created specifically for the Super Friends animated series. This dude could grow to towering heights just by uttering the word “inukchuk”. Cool, right? Later on, in the Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice series, he was reimagined as Longshadow, then as a younger version of the character named Tye Longshadow. Now, here’s something exciting – rumor has it that we might finally see him in live-action on Peacemaker! Fingers crossed!

Manitou Raven

The character from DC comics who serves as an inspiration by the Apache Chief, is half of the power couple known as Manitou Raven and Manitou Dawn. This duo made their debut in the impressive run of Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke on JLA during the early 2000s. Manitou Raven, an ancient figure estimated to be thousands of years old, originates from an Atlantean tribe that would eventually transform into the Apache nation. Transferred through time, he and his wife joined the Justice League ranks themselves. With skills in shamanism and sorcery, Manitou Raven employed his magical abilities to battle alongside the JLA. Given the resemblance to an older man in the photo shared by James Gunn, it’s possible that this could be a timeless manifestation of Manitou Raven himself?

Super Chief

Although Apache Chief might be more recognized, it’s DC Comics’ first authentic Native American superhero who goes by the name Super Chief. Unlike a single hero, Super Chief represents a legacy passed down to safeguard the Five Nations of the Iroquois, empowered by the mystical Manitou Stone. This hero possesses strength equivalent to a thousand bears, speed faster than the swiftest deer, and agility surpassing wolves.

Black Bison

As a comics enthusiast, it’s important not to jump to conclusions about any character, Native-American or otherwise. It could very well be that this individual is not a hero, but rather a formidable villain. In my opinion, if such a character were to take on the role of a villain, John Ravenhair, also known as Black Bison, would be a top contender.
