James Gunn is contemplating ideas beyond Superman, and it could potentially involve the Caped Crusader. In discussions about the upcoming DCU revamp, Gunn hinted that the next phase for Superman might deviate from a typical sequel, suggesting instead the possibility of speculated team-ups with Batman, such as the World’s Finest partnership.
Gunn teases something different than Superman 2
When asked by EW.com if he’s already thinking about a Superman sequel, Gunn replied:
The project I am currently involved with shares some similarities, but it’s not exactly a direct continuation or sequel to the classic Superman stories.
Fans are intrigued and guessing that Gunn might be doing more than just Superman 2; they suspect it could be a larger project, perhaps even a crossover between Batman, hinted at by World’s Finest.
In the comic books, “World’s Finest” is a lasting series that portrays Superman and Batman as allies instead of adversaries, unlike Zack Snyder’s “Batman vs. Superman.” This partnership is typically employed when these iconic figures join forces to confront challenges that are beyond the capabilities of a single hero. The new DCU could benefit from utilizing this team-up strategy after the release of “Superman,” to generate momentum.
World’s Finest instead of Brave and the Bold?
In the case of Gunn’s version of Superman, David Corenswet has been chosen for the role. However, the actor playing Batman in Gunn’s DC Universe remains a mystery as of now. Interestingly, hints about Gunn’s Batman were first dropped in the animated series called Creature Commandos.
It was once speculated that the debut of the live-action DCU’s Batman would take place in the movie titled “The Brave and the Bold“, but there’s uncertainty about this project materializing. Instead, a film titled “World’s Finest” might be used to introduce the new Batman character.

All roads lead to Justice League?
If Gunn is working on “World’s Finest,” it seems he might be setting up a new version of the Justice League as well. Additionally, Gunn has revealed that a Wonder Woman film is underway, and to Entertainment Weekly, he stated that the Justice League doesn’t currently exist in the DCU.
“…there is no Justice League in this world… not yet.”
Superman flies into theaters July 11.
